I would like to echo all the other comments!!
Awesome job!!

I think that there should also be a link in the newbie section so they can read this post. It will give them a good understanding of who the process/event/evening goes and what to possibly expect.

Again, kudo's to you on a great post!!

So what would you guys pay? The fare was 65 baht, you pulled out 100 (and in fact don't have any small bills). How much change do you ask for? This has happened to me a few times, so I know my answer.

I don't see how it's ambiguous and it's only stupid if you fail to see the hypocrisy the answers illustrate.

Bigin, I would but I can't figure out the special "rich farang" line, so I can pay my 100 baht fare.

Everyone pays the same fare on the skytrain and from other threads it's been determined that is a very unfair thing. I feel so guilty paying the same price as a secretary who only earns 5000 baht a month.

Maybe that's why the uniformed guy is standing on the platform? To collect the farang surcharge? I can't think of the number of times he's saved my life by blowing his whistle when I leaned over the line to look for the next train and really an extra 50 baht to him is only a dollar to me.

What kinda of bill are you talking about for 65 baht?? Do you mean female bill, restaurant bill, taxi bill??

If the bill was 65 baht for a s/t female, then I'd pull out 1,100 baht and not ask for any change. l/t, i'd pull out 2,100 or more. Heavens knows why a female would charge so little in the first place though.

If the bill was  65 baht for a restaurant and the service was good, then I'd pull out 165 and I would not ask for any change. If the service was okay, then I'd pull out 100 or 120 and not ask for any change.

If a taxi ride was 65 baht, then I'd either pull out 100 or 120 and not ask for any change.

Not sure if that is what you wanted to know, but those are my answers!! ha ha ha!!

ABC, Given the thread it should have been clear I was referring to the taxi (I just changed the word "bill" to "fare" in the question to make it even more explicit).

You've answered my question and that is exactly what I wanted to know. I assume you also pay the asking price without haggling for whatever goods you might buy on the street.  So you consistently overpay whatever you do in Bangkok.  "Overpay" is not necessarily a derogatory term; it is only if you think it is.

I have a general level which I will pay for things/items. If the item falls in that area great.

A little haggeling here and there never hurts though.

But will not haggle just for the sake of trying to get an item lower in price. This item has to be outside the level I am comfortable to pay. And, I am realistic on that level. I also take into account the type of good and the potential mark up on that good.

I call it comfort level. For items, we are taking about durable goods and not people.

Just so we are crystal clear.

ABC, we're clear on one point. E.g. If a vendor offers a t-shirt for 250 baht, you'll take it without haggling; it's much cheaper than it would be in the states and you feel generous so it's not worth your time to get it down to the price of 150 or 200 that the vendor would still be happy with.

However, I don't get your point about not haggling over "people." If a stunner offers to go with you for 10,000 baht, you're saying you won't make a counter-offer and will refuse to go with her even if she lowers her price to 3000? Is that because you find it distasteful to talk about money for "companionship"? Or is it because you think she will be offended by you questioning her worth? Or is it something else?
