Stayed in Thailand for 4 years never ever have problem with credit card. I think avoid paying with them in GO GO bars and other hum hum places. Then you be fine.

IMO it is not a good idea to bring a lot of cash. Bring Travelers Checks instead. The exchange rate for TC's are actually better than cash (because it is easier for banks to verify them compared to counterfeit money).

I used credit cards at Poseidon, but used cash at most other places.

Many hotels will try to add 5% on the bill if you use credit cards (unless you get a written waiver before hand). This is true even though it is supposedly illegal.

Traveler Checks are the way to go. Just remember to bring your passport with you when you need to cash one.

rather old thread but still usefull info.

I did a mix of just about everything

Opened an extra bank account as my bank would only let me have one debit card.

So I took two credit cards two debit cards plus some cash and travelers checks.

Kept my travelers checks, cash, one debit card, one credit card in the hotel safe or safety deposit box.

Carried one debit card and credit card on me at all times. Plus a photocopy of my passport.

Also gave a friend a cheque just incase I needed a money transfer.

Didn't really need all that but did meet a young lady from my contry who had everything stolen. She had nothing

Better safe then sorry I think. Even if I get robbed and loose my credit card and debit card I still have back up with the other credit card and debit card.

Used the credit card while shopping and for some hotels and never had any problems. Some hotels did charge me to use the credit card but I think it was around 2-3%

YMMV

Thailand is a bit more sophisticated about money and cards than some visitors may think.

There are ATMs in every small town linked to worldwide networks. Credit cards are widely accepted in cities and large towns, less so outside unless in a hotel etc.

Travellers cheques can be cashed in banks, some hotels. FOREX is an easy way of making money in Thailand and many hotels will rip 5 to 10% on the exchange rate.

So all very good!!!!

However there is a scam at the moment in Bangkok which everyone should be aware of. I have posted before about this but it may be worth reiterating.

There is a gang based in Sukhumvit Soi 3 (Yes they are Nigerian) who are offering 1,000 Baht per credit card carbon to make copies in Malaysia. This I can attest to, it is no urban myth, as I have been offerred this amount.

It is possible to copy the magnetic strip with small devices which you can carry in your pocket. Excellent for a quick swipe on the way to the register.

This is a lot of money in Thailand and they must find a lot of people willing to deal with them.

There is very little you can do about it except pay cash where possible, scrutinise your statements and follow your card by eye.

And another scam is to have duplicate keys to the safe deposit boxes in the foyers of hotels.

Even a padlock on the box inside is not safe as they can be relatively easy to pick. I can "do" a cheap combination lock in 2 minutes so I am sure not going to leave valuables in one.

Most room safes are vulnerable to the default unlocking code which are supposed to be secret to the management. If your safe does not open one day it is because it has been opened earlier with the default code.

Having said all that, I have never been robbed myself but there is a first time.

Well, I do not understand what the worry is all about (excpent the credti card frauds).

I travel to LOS with two cards. One debet card (with VISA) and a backup Mastercard.

If both should fail, I could enter most bank in Bangkok and get a transfer from my home bank. It will cost me, but I will still get cash in a dcent amount of time.

Second thought: I believe I got something called "Need cash or replacement card" for my Mastercard that would get me out of this kind of trouble. But my main point is: You guys worry too mucj.

Cash only + ATM card. I wouldn't want anyone seeing my credit card bills especially when most massage parlours I visit don't use holding company names. There's probably only a moderate risk of cc fraud, but why risk it? With a majority of the population "poor" people, why tempt them?

Packripper,

The majority of the population may be poor but they are by and large honest. Maybe I am unusual but I have experienced relatively few incidents of dishonesty in Thailand except with politicians and rich Thais.

The average "poor" Thai I come into contact with I would trust with my wallet. For instance my house is never locked as the lock broke six years ago. My maids and gardener, driver etc. are free to wander into the house and take whatever they want. I have never lost even a Baht.

I turn a blind eye to the food consumption rate as I know the staff cannot eat as much as they appear to. They do of course feed their extended families out of my larder when they drop by but if you are wise you don't say anything.

Such is the way of Thailand and we all rub along together, the poor Thai and the rich farang.

Yes, probably not a good idea to lump all the poor together. I should have specifically mentioned those who are poor who wish to cut corners -and I've seen aplenty- to obtain upward social mobility -there are probably more than a few "rich or better off" Thais who used to fit that category as well-.

I'm not sure if the credit card fraud occurred in Thailand, but 4 months after coming back, I was hit for $1,500 in one day from what appears to be a non-existant camera shop in Toyko, that I have never heard of. My credit card was charged an average of $133 every hour or so. I was and still am very careful with my card, never use it outside the US except for hotel bills, and never for purchases over the internet. VISA security is still not sure how they got my number but all they have told me is, "they have multiple ways". The bad news is that a credit to my VISA may be difficult since I was late informing them of the fraud. The one bit of advice I have is check your credit card statement as soon as you get it and immediately report bogus charges.
