The USD is (and will be for some time) the strongest currency to compete against. A lot (I won't be arrogant and say most) Americans feel that their dollar is indestructible - for use of a better term... This will become their weak spot when you look at the economical positions of a few European and some Asia/Pacific countries. As an Australian, I'd like to see the AUD rise up a bit more against the USD and the Euro in order for it to reflect its true value but am afraid that’s not going to happen any time soon. No offence to the Americans here but the USD *ISN'T* going to dominate forever, my advice is to make the most of it while you can. (I know I would!) Just my opinion!

And no offense taken. America's foreign policies may not be very popular (hell, I don't always agree with many of them myself), but it's funny how friendly people get when I start whipping out greenbacks. I'm now reminded of a joke someone told me during my travels in the Asia Pacific region:- A man walked into a brothel that was famous for its women who will do anything, and where nothing is taboo. The madam saw the man getting very friendly with "Sasha," one of the top pros there. The man leaned forward and whispered something into Sasha's ear. She screamed in indignation and stormed off. The madam was shocked, and wondered what could possibly offend Sasha, someone who's done it all? The madam then saw the same scene repeated a few times - man would whisper into a lady's ear, and she would be horrified and storm off. A few even slapped him. Finally, the madam made her way to him and asked him, "Sir, what have you been saying to my girls, that would cause them to react so violently?" The man replied, "I asked them whether I could pay in Australian dollars."

I live in Canada and the American border is 5 minutes from my house so I am very familiar with the American dollar and like it as much as the next person I sell a lot of stuff on e-bay and it is very nice getting the USD because it is one of the only currencies recognized world wide. I agree with MT on the American foreign policies, and you can rest assured that Mr. Bush is going to find Iraq in violation of some policy so he can finish the war that his daddy started years ago...

Not that anyone knows for sure, but it seems to me that the baht will trade in a range of 42 to 45 for the next year or so .. to the US$ .. If the Euro continues to gain some strength against the US$ then you will do better. Austalia's economy is doing well so the AU$ should do well too.. A big question in all this is what will happen to the moribund Japanese economy .. it sucks and has for some time.. there is probably a need for the Yen to be devalued a bit and that would affect their travel to Thailand and as the baht is valued against a basket of currencies, it might affect that as well. Someone mentioned that the US$ will not be on top forever .. well forever is one hell of a long time.. Again who knows for sure, but looking forward for the next ten years or so, there is nothing on the sideline to take its place. The Euro might, but there are enough problems in Euroland (deficits and unemployment) that unless they make some substantial changes they will not be taking over. The Pound used to be what the US$ is today and will never be again, altho it should remain strong as the English wisely stayed out of the EU .. Going back further in history.. it used to be the Roman money was tops, then the Spanish took over for a short time (realatively) and then the Pound for 200 years or so.. the US$ has been on top since the WWII and I would guess that a 200 year run for the USA is not out of the question .. tough to knock off a leader, once they get on top.. All these other countries would have to change what they use.. countries like Cambodia for all intents and purposes use the US$ as their currency.. ditto for some of the South American countries.. thanks to drugs.. even Mexico due to the number of greenbacks sent South every year.. Even the blue eyed arabs of the North will accept US$'s in most places.. they like them as they have not lost value like the Canadian $ has .. When I first started going to Canada on business in 1974 or so, the US$ and Canadian $ were at parity (even a little more if memory serves me right), but thanks to the wonderful financial mgmt in Canada it has lost a lot of value since then..

come on guys the € is not all that bad. as tg's concerned they learnt very quick that a € is about the same as a $ so no problem with these two currencies everywhere in Thailand. sorry to disappoint you US guys, the dollar is not that allmighty anymore. with the inception of the € a lot of asian central banks (mainly china and taiwan) have shifted their assets into € and are doing well! also in the arabian world the $ is continuing to loose popularity, very much due to the us foreign policy and the recent weakness of the greenback. in europe the $ was never popular anyway as most transactions and reserves were held in DM and now in €. all the shadow economies in russia and the former eastern block deal in € not in $. if this trend continues i wouldn't be surprised to see some further $ weakness, so make the most out of your yankee money while you have the buying power!
