The PIN of the ATM card is not cracked, but recorded as you key it in.  A special recording device is needed and it's wired to the pad that you run your ATM card through, the same pad that you key in your PIN.  The establishment is most likely not a part of the CC fraud ring, usually a crooked employee who is paid off by the CC fraud ring.

After a sophisticated CC fraud ring stole the information on the magnetic strip of the CC, it can make duplicate cards all over the world with fake IDs matching the fake names on the CC and use them freely until your next statement.  If they stole the information from someone who is at the beginning of a 3 week vacation, they would have plenty of time to charge up a storm.

It's a good idea to check what charges have been made to your card from time to time.  I do that even when I am at home and not on vacation.

I will be staying at the MS next week.  Let's see if I am lucky or not with my CC.

It has to be a dishonest employee at the establishment where the card was used that is stealing the number.
This also happened recently at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. A cashier had a device she used to record the numbers. It took the FBI a while to track her down.

I think the theft happened at the Flipper Lodge, Pattaya as this was the only place I used the same cc on both trips.   oaktoad mentioned I was not careful because I used the card. I would agree with his observation if I had used it in MP or whore house.

If you used it at Flipper and think that is where it was ripped.. then why pick on the MP or a whore house..

Simple fact is that if you use a CC anywhere, you take the risk of having the number stolen. You increase the risk substantially when you use it in a third rate economy like Thailand ..

In 15 years of travel to Bkk I have never used my CC there and unless some type of shit hits the fan awfully hard, I never will.

Until ATMs I used cash and TCs .. now ATMs are my favorite way.. as your card never leaves your possesion then it is almost impossible for someone to steal the number ..

I've travelled all over the world and up until last august I never had a problem. I used cc on 8 previous trips to LOS.  After being burned twice I will reconsider my cc usage in LOS. Using atm or tc are no problem. Only hassle, I don't like carring my passport around to cash tc. I normally carry a photo copy.

BigDUSA,
Your experience was a good one to refresh us on these CC issues. I particularly think that the risk of using CCs is everywhere. Not only in Thailand. Thousands of cases on this issue. Thus, we may consider the use of cash during our trip to LOS, which I think is more convenient. You can put the big cash in the safe box of your hotel and take bits on daily basis. I also agree with the issue pointed out by OAKTOAD concerning the use of ATMs....just a suggestion.

Like pinga said the risk of CCs is everywhere and not just in Thailand.  All you need is a crooked employee who is on the take and it could happen at the Hilton Hotel so don't beat yourself up about it.  I am going to bring cash, TC, ATM and CC.  However, the CC will only be used for the hotel and the ATM for emergency cash and only at a bank ATM machine.  My cards and TCs will be in the hotel safe mostly.

Aurum quote- "now with all this fraud, here in los, in the rest of the world and in cyberspace, how do those who issue the cards, and have to cover the loss, make money?"

Aurum, I used to work in Loss Prevention in the UK. The CC companies are insured against losses by fraud. That's also why they feel there's no need to waste man hours helping the police trying to catch the culprits, which pisses off the police no end.

Once the relevant info is gathered by the fraudsters, with the right equipment, they'll churn out a cloned card to use or even just order over the phone or internet, though this is being countered by telephone checks by the CC companies.
My personal bank account was cleaned out a few days before Christmas a couple years back. Got the money back no problem, but never did find out who was responsible though I had my suspicions.

since it seems that the cc issuer pays for the fraud (or their insurance does) it shouldnt be aproblem using cc, if theres fraud its easy for you to proove that it was and youre refunded.
