1) My TCs were in US$.

2) If you live in the US, it would be easier to get TCs in US$.  Most banks in the US do not sell British pounds TCs.  Also, if your funds are in US$ to start, you will have to convert them to British pounds when you buy BP TCs, and convert again when you buy Bahts in LOS.  You will probably end up with a worse exchange rate after converting twice.

Cool thanks. FWIW I was thinking about getting them online, thus the question about getting them in pounds instead of USD

I buy TC in US dollars here in Saudi for no charge and cash them in Thailand at a better rate than the cash equivalent although there is a small fee 20 baht i think but if you use 100's or 500's you are better off than using the ATM because your bank will rip you off on the exchange rates plus there is usually a overseas transactions fee on top.
After 10pm difficult to find any exchange open so do it early.

BigDUSA:  I had a problem with Visa TC's last year on one of my trips.  I could not get them cashed until I pointed out all I wanted to do was deposit the baht to my account.  I always take American Express now.

Mr. Machine:  Not a political question, but, do you find you get more baht taking UK pounds rather than US$?  I have always taken dollars but am open to a change and I am just up the road from you in Saudi.  I plan to move quite a bit of money back with me in June so it could make a difference.

Well there is more baht to the pound than the dollar!!!!!

Seriously It all depends if you think that the pound might favourably appreciate against the baht.
It is a gamble either way.
But for the relatively small amounts of cash that i take on hols it wouldn't matter if i took pounds or dollars really.
You could take a mixture.
You must have an offshore account if you are in Saudi so you could use that also.
For retirement in Thailand do you need to put money into a thai bank account?
If i was going to retire in Thailand i would keep all my investments offshore and rent not buy unless you want a little hobby like a business where you are not too concerned about returns and can afford to lose.

Another way is: I travel with an Amex that allows me up to USD4000 cash adavance on it.

Most other CCs will allow you to draw a CA if you organize it before hand.

I either do it at the ATM or go into one of 3 money changes inthe Suk area that specificaly hand out CAs on Amex - although they do tend to limit it to USD500 per day.

USD500 per day is more than enough.
