Wow, "The Frankenstein Syndrome." Have seen that before, but now I have a label for it!
I really agree that the lady must want to move on from "the life" or there is no point in dropping money into the pit. ÝAnd on a positive note, my TGF is actually considering the job at the hotel I mentioned on the "sponsorship" thread. I think this would be a step forward for her, and a step up for her self esteem.
Most farm girls don't dream of growing up and becoming bargirls -- I know my TGF wanted to be a nurse. But I think there is a two step process here (at least with my situation). Step one: get her out of the scene and into a space that's comfortable enough financially and otherwise, so that the temptation to return to the easy money in the scene is not so great. Step two: provide her with the tools to work on self-sufficiency and self-respect, so that she can reintegrate into the mainstream.
It's a big step up from the bar secene, one that can seem too big to make in a single leap. I think the sponsorship thing can make for a "gentler landing" and provide a cooling down period from which a better future can be carved. Provided the lady really wants to get out in the first place.

I hope you know that if I thought you were wrong about your approach I would have told you by now. I agree wholeheartedly with your views and what I know of your basic plan.
In fact I meant to say on the other thread (which I still may fore the "benefit" of others) that what you and PhiiJames are talking about isn't even what I call sponsorship; it's just having a GF whom you are tryinmg to help out. To me being a sponsor is something else.
BTW as my background is in hotels -- though I'm not doing that these days -- I'd be happy to help the fair maiden in question if I can. More about that privately.

Thanks muchly for reminding me about your hotelier experince -- I think the jet lag/khai jai/Mekong cocktail has weakened my brain cells a tad  . I'll keep my eye out for the PM. She told me that she would work as a hostess or waitress, "same like lady do at Nana breakfast." I asked her if part of the job description included "short time." She laughed and said, "oye, nooo, not do short time, do same like nungsao at bar." Hmmmm, anyway, it appears to be very legit and above board.
As you know, it can be a little hard to decode some of the things she says, as I rarely get all the details at once, but I'll sync up with you by PM.

Think most of you spot on when you say that the hours they would have to work, and what they would earn, - hardly stack up against what a good looking BG /MPG is going to make ... which I guess is the problem - think this scenario would work better with girls a bit older, who realise the BG days are numbered, or a "straight" TG. Glad Dave/Mr Joe have had some success, I know over the years Ive sent a few off to Ban Nok stocked up with various goods, usually a hundred sunglasses, or watches, to be sold in the local market ; brought at Klong Thom for about 70bt each, selling everywhere at 199bt - only result was all the friends/relatives got a free gift, and any cash earnt was immediately spent, they seemed to not understand the part about keeping half the profit to re-invest in fresh supplies ! Restaurants are popular, but hard work, little time off, i cant see why sitting in MBK selling clothes [whilst you, the sponser, has a video cam in the changing room 5555 - JOKING!!!] would not appeal - No doubt working nights, as a BG or freelancer, getting back to something like a 9-5 job is something not easily done -

A lot of these girls have loans over their heads that are compounding against them at 2-20% PER MONTH. Ý You got the courage (and trust) to clear that for her? Ý A lot of times, that's the only thing that keeps her working (and in your sphere of influence). Ý Without that debt she might just go back home and do what a lot of locals do best... sit around and do nothing.
It doesn't matter how much detail and "professional" management you pour into a clothing booth or som tam stand for her. If you had all credit cards maxed out and a lien on your mortgage back home, it'd be hard to beat the house as well.

Good points you made there. Before offering any funding I made sure the girls had a business head on them and that some pretty simple planning was going to be needed.

Too right! I learned that lesson at age 21 and it was at both of our expenses. One needs to be very careful with the "knight in shining armour" bit (or as the Psychs call it "The Messiah complex".)
