Jumping in a bit late, but I knew something about that number of $350k/month was bothering me.

That is the approximate value attached to the retirement package Jack Welch, former CEO of GE, received. The original package was valued at ~$8M per year but has been scaled down to ~$4M a year, which remains the biggest package in terms of ongoing payments.

30yr treasuries are at something like 4.5% so all it takes is a trifling $100m or so. Sell a company to Microsoft or the market and it's a no brainer. Mebbe I should look into that....

2 years to retirement w/ plans to retire in Thailand (knowing that if I party like I do during holiday visits I'll only last 2 years, if I'm lucky maybe 5).

With the current shitty exchange rate, 37.7 baht - 1.00 U.S. Dollar looking at 160K baht a month to live on. Figuring:
Rent - AC, Fully Furnished with living room/bedroom for
around 8,000 baht a month.
Utilities - 3,000 baht a month.
Food - 15,000 (like eating out) a month.
Transportation - 8,000 a month (may make a couple of
trips around Thailand/Laos/Cambodia).
That'll leave me 127,000 baht a month for misc activities
which works out to around 100.00 U.S. per day per
month.

Hoping not having touch my savings, IRA, mutual funds and use my rental property to pay for the kids (1) school. With the kid getting everything after I die smiling with a condom on and he turns 25 years old. Either completing college or finding out how rough life is, before getting my life's work.

apartment way to low, good luck finding that one. even in on nut 1 bedrooms are up to 15k nowadays. unless you wanna live in the rachaprop area. with your budget you could afford a 20 to 30k place, easily.

unless you wanna live in the burbs.

mosquito2002,

Agree with RTB, apartment way too low. My TGF and I are paying 9500 Baht/month for a studio with aircon. Energy bills and water total about 2500 when I'm there and less when I'm not (she turns off the aircon every chance she gets). Has a small pool and a porr excuse for a gym/exercise room. Internet (reasonably highspeed) in-room is 650 Baht/month with True -- it's a shared twisted pair LAN with the modem/router in the downstairs office. Nice but frugal place, I would want something with more amenities if I were retiring in LOS.

Other numbers are discretionary, of course.

Why rent,, buy,, you can get a decent 2 bed condo say in Bangna area around the 2.1 million BAHT range,,, payments around 14,000BHT per month.
As for "play money" do not calculate on daily activities such as you do on holiday,,, every expat I have met say that you soon tire of bar-girls, soapies etc everynight and settle into a more conservative life-style.
Also you will soon find some favourite restaurants that serve cheap/ quality food and become a regular.

You can live very comfortably on that amount of money.

Cheers.

Yes money alloted for rent is too cheap. Utilities depend on air con and hot water usage. Transport may be a little high.

You have no budget for laundry (3K month), medical (?), Cable TV (2K), Internet (1K), Gym membership (1.5K)

It would be best to find a place within walking distance of either the subway or train station.

3k a month for laundry ?

WTF do you have EVERYthing dry cleaned ?

internet could be as low as 300 and as high as 5k

the TOT service is only 1k/month, but I doubt it's seamless and probably hiccups or is down a lot

for 300 is about the lowest you can get a shared connection in an apartment building

UBCTV or True Visions (new name) is about 1,400/month, but the initial install is obviously more

gym ?, just lift TGs in the morning as the finish for the night's romp, 555

BTW, I think 300k Baht goes a lot less farther now than it used to, scary

Old threads?

This is my first post in over a year (and my third or fourth visit to the forum in that time). I'm amazed that all the threads on the front page of each sub-forum are pretty much identical to what they were when I left.

Have you guys been sleeping for a year?
