Thought I would revive this thread a bit. Just wondering what the member's thoughts are on ability to save in bkk based on salary around 150-160k per year paid in USD (haven't fully worked out tax implications). I know it will provide a great lifestyle, but some of the posts in this thread seemed to indicate that 300k baht per month would provide a nice lifestyle but not much in the way of savings. At current exchange rate, above USD salary a bit higher than 300k baht per month but not by that much. I would be hopeful of putting away around 70k USD per year. Any more thoughts?

Definitely doable, nikko - depends on your self control. Are you able to save in the States? Then you can save in Thailand. Do you spend every last penny back home? Well, then there is always something more to spend on - and you get more bangs for your buck here, so it is harder to resist the 'when will I ever be able to afford THAT again' temptation.

It also depends upon your expected standard of living; the extent to which you live in the Thai or the expat economy; and the extent to which you like your little luxuries (eg, girls). No girls, no expat life, no western luxuries, I think you'd be hard pushed to spend that 300k B. Well, I would. Unlimited high class clubs (the type where the girls DON'T f*** you, as far as I can tell - like why would I wanna go there? Oh, just to socialise. um....) and you'll eat into your savings easily.

Nikko, you do not mention if it is net of tax or gross. Tax bracket in your case would be around 30%. Annual income above THB 4.2m is taxed at 37%.

So let us say 1/3 for the taxman, 1/3 to the landlord and 1/3 for you. It seems doable.

That is gross and subject to US tax with applicable exemptions. Thanks for the responses.

If you have to ask, then you don't deserve an answer... It's pretty obvious what snpark refers to.

thanks
perhaps he should look up the word gross in a dictionary - maybe one with an index in it

however I shall explain:
there is more than 1 meaning to the word gross
e.g I f***ed my mum, and it was gross

it doesnt mean I f***ed her 12 times or 144 times or whatever a gross is (maybe I should use a thesarus - hhhmm whats another word for that!?)

anyway you get my point? or maybe not. its irreverant.
