Strangely though everyone seems to look down on the "Thai boyfriend" so much that one would think that there would be few Farangs who would lower themselves to the same level, fortunately/hopefully they are few.
I agree with you 100% (in honor of the Super Bowl, I'll actually agree with you 110%). While I despise them greatly, I can be somewhat understanding of how an average Thai guy could turn into such a leech. Given the environment they've grown up in it is not surprising that they have such little respect for women, and it must be terribly hard for them to pleasantly sit by with no job while foreigners who are no smarter (and certainly not as charming or attractive) than them prance around with their women.
Again, this doesn't justify their actions, but when you look at the many opportunities we've been given it is really only the completely morally bankrupt who would stoop to that level. Given the huge number of choices of good women in Bangkok (from good girl to good hooker) why would someone choose to play with the most dishonest and untrustworthy? Certainly, schadenfreude is a factor; there are a number of people who do enjoy watching others suffer, but on the net we just call them trolls which is a lot easier to spell.

hmm.... Good question. Makes me wonder too the way you put it. ....... perhaps, maybe they do not necessarily have a better chance at making it over the long term. On the one hand, the naive bargirl and rookie customer will likely trust each other more at the beginning and be happier while things go well, but on the other they will be less tolerant as they would have higher expectations. Whereas the reverse will be the case for the two seasoned veterans. This probably evens out the chances of making it for one couple versus the other.
Experience makes us adjust our expectations for the future and prepares us better for handling minor dissapointments, but on the other hand, leaves scars that make us to be cynical about future happiness, then making us raise the threshold at which we are willing to take the risk of lowering our guard and take a shot again at romantic bliss.

I found a link to the article that I mentioned on page 15 of this thread when we discussed that there were some attempts to explain infidelity through evolution.
The article was published in 1994 in Time magazine. The writter is Robert Wright who also wrote "The Moral Animal: Evolutionary Psychology and Everyday Life" (one of the 12 best books of 1994 according to the New York Times Book Review).
For those that want to have an idea what the article is about before clicking on the link, the title and subtitles of the different sections are:

MrJoe, digressing to the discussion on books, another one I like also is "The Mating Mind" by Geoffrey Miller. He basically goes into expanding on Darwin, Dawkins and many others to explain how sexual choice shaped the evolution of human nature.
Survival of the fittest my ass! Being fit to survive doesnt work. What is the point of being fit if not to have sex? Being fit to have better chances of surviving and grow old? Wrong!! Being fit to have better chances of having sex. YES!! If an animal doesn't have sex, it will leave no heriditary trace in the next generation. As evolution is concerned, the animal may as well have died young as it didnt matter how fit it was or how long it lived. Survival without sex means evolutionary oblivion

only the unique LOS enviroment but also
an Asian/Eastern culture that is not relflected
in these books, they are written from a
Western perspective

Lucky you. Ignorance is a blessing; it makes people avoid questioning things and makes them the perfect followers, as they happily take anything that comes their way as it is. Sadly the smart and educated ones, while they lead the ignorant and lazy, they are also less happy than the followers. How sad that we owe progress to depressed unhappy ðpeople.
Btw, just for those that care to know a little about this academic BS.... evolution deals with instinctive behavior and not with cultural matters (e.g. west versus east).
