TU I agree wholheartedly, I am far happier here. I have no desire to get into business, so it's not an issue. I've received many offers, saying no is easy. I'm happy renting and if I'm not, I know where the door is. Rate at 11;15am today from SCB = 34.86

whats up guys, 32.7 this morning..... At this very moment I hear my wife in the kitchen on the phone with her mom yelling in thai...mostly about new government..and I hear "somsit song" like every 8th word .....she told me that I am wrong about Thaksin.. I joked earlier "but its good for thai people that make like 200baht a day, now its better for them if they want to holiday in america" that just set her off pointing her finger at me.."if you think people make 200baht a day can pay for ticket to America you crazy man (usually she understands my sarcasm) only rich people in Thailand can holiday in america..what about my money!" and here I am 5 years into our relationship thinking she was such a sweetheart and cared for others on a serious note, do any of the more financial savvy guys here have any clue that this will continue....my vision of retiring back to thailand is diminishing. atl

I just went to the supermarket and as I payed thought about how a simple thing this drop would have effected me on a weekly basis when I was living/working in Thailand. I went to Villa twice a month for my "yank" food and put it on my AMEX..usually 4000baht ($100) would last me a good 2 weeks...I guess the same 4000baht is about 5400 baht now, or have the "farang" products prices adjusted to the change??? Obviously pension checks coming from the states are taking a blow, but what other area's has this drop in the $$ effected any of you "yanks" living over there? it has been pointed out, but I worry "nit noi" about my vacations back but think about how much it would suck if I was still living over there with my credit card charges and minimal dividend checks from my nightclub in the ATL (that went a long way back then)... I will ask again, do any economic dudes here have insight into how long this drop will last?not asking for svingali or kweeqweg but just any realistic info.. cheers atl

nobody knows, the best you can do is look at the past. Look at a chart since the dollar started freely trading and you will see very definite patterns of weak dollar / strong dollar, how long did they last?

atl, No quick easy answer but I'll pass you some basic information along with my opinion. The problem is two fold for the American dollar exchange rate. 1) The $US falling 2) The Baht strengthening. 1) I truly believe that the USA is encouraging falls in its dollar to off-set the strength of China and to conteract China' refusal to float it's currency. 2) The Thai economy has been very strong for a number of years, principlydue to it's manufacturing base expanding rapidly and mooving into "high tech" area such as hard-drives and integrated circuits. This has mainly been fueled from Japanese money. Looking for possible weaknesses in the Thai economy,,,,, competition from China, India and to a lesser degree vietnam. Thailand is the 2nd largest exporter of sugar in the world,,, competition, India exported 1.5 million tonnes last year and is expanding rapidly. Thailand is the worlds largest exporter of prawns ( some strange people wish to call them Shrimp), Thailands exports continue to grow but they are failing to grab the niche markets 9 high value) such as the Japanese market. Competition from Indonesia and Malaysia is growing rapidly ( respectably a 21% and 40% growth in exports in the last year). Thailand is the worlds #1 Rice exporter,,, competition is rapidly growing from Vietnam and India who have much lower production costs. In fact Vietnam is now #2 rice exporter in the world. The story continues with other major Thai exports such as Pine-apple, Tuna, Rubber, tapioca Maize etc. All up there seems little relief in the short-term but one only needs to look to Vietnam to see longer term harsh competition for Thai products. The Vietnamese "Dong" has actually decreased against the US$ and there has been huge monetary inflows into the country. Levels of production capability and technology are booming with the relaxation of govermental control.Looking at Vietnam's export growth in products similiar to Thailands reveals some worrying statistics for the Thai's in the next several years. Combine this with tourism,, Vietnam tourism is expanding RAPIDLY as people realise it is a safe, fun place to visit. Currently tourism and the associated foriegn currency input is expanding in excess of 11% per year and is a direct competitor with Thailand. Summarising,,, Thailand and Vietnam have similiar populations, whilst thailand has prospered vietnam has lagged due to governmental issues post war. Vietnam has a much more fertile land, cheaper labour combined with a growing "Capitalist" driven infrastructure. It will be the success of the Vietnamese that brings Thailand, its economy and its BAHT back to real values, when that will happen is open to conjecture but the writers feeling is 3-5 years. An investment into vietnam at this time would be a good ploy to gaining advantage in retirement to Thailand. The dollar return over mid term would see the invester more able to enjoy the fruits of his labour in the more stable country of Thailand. To be truthful, if Vietnam ever looses it's communist government I would be looking to retire there rather than Thailand. Mel.

I've been looking for a real good chart with this, something since 1971 when the US Dollar dropped the gold standard and went into a currency standard. Anyone have a link that shows all the charts at my leisure for all currencies going back to 1970? It would be terrific! Thanks. Gyaos.
