Baht hits another 9-year high

The baht traded this morning at barely over 35 per US dollar, the highest rate since shortly after the 1997 collapse of the currency.
Amid speculation that the military backed government will soon life currency controls, the baht hit 35.01 per dollar on Wednesday morning.
The baht has gained 12 per cent this year against the dollar, despite frantic efforts by the government to keep the value down.
It is now far above the point which sparked protests by exporters last year, which in turn led to the currency controls. Those controls have proved useless in regulating the currency.
On overnight markets overseas, the baht traded at 32.725 baht in what many claim is a two-tier currency market.

finally read one american retiree (on another forum) who was concerned about his shrinking buying power, apparently everybody else came to LOS w/ plenty of money, anybody know for sure whose really running the show in Thailand, a bunch of corrupt dime a dozen generals? I wouldn't buy or invest money in LOS I couldn't afford to lose, same w/ the girls, rent

Based on the site that badfishlbc provided the THB has been dropping at a steady rate since Jan of last year. There has been no 'smoking gun' but a consistant decline...

For an American who visits Thailand, ther eis a 'double' hit.
Not only has the Baht appreciated against the dollar, the cost of goods and services in Baht have gone up a lot in the past 5 years.
I tend to look at 'spending' power or purchasing power.
Let's look at prices 5 years ago and you will see how bad things are today......
Old prices (you fill in the new ones)
Heiniken 80 baht
Nice Hotel or apartment 2,000 baht per night
Food (a lot cheaper 5 years ago)
Bar fine 300-400 baht
The only thing that I see that is the same price is the taxi's.......
We have suffered around a 20% decline in the dollar from 5 years ago, plus another 10-30% increase in the cost of goods and services......
This is up to a 50% DECLINE in our purchasing power.....
I don' think that we really process this type of data when we visit however many times per year, but if you have interests in Thailand (family, business, etc) you live it every day.
It is now better to hit South America than LOS.....
On the plus side, it is only a matter of time before they blow up the economy in LOS..... It is all one big cycle, right now the issue is to talk down the dollar, but that can change very quickly.

As pointed out earlier in this thread, the Thai baht now has two exchange rates.
- The offshore rate which is not subject to capital controls, so the buyer of baht pays a premium to be free of that constraint. The exchange rate for this category can be seen here.
- The onshore rate which is caught by capital controls, so it has no premium for the seller. The exchange rate for this category can be seen here.
I am not sure whether all credit cards convert at the onshore or offshore rate, as that depends on the procedures of each card issuer. However, you can be sure of getting the onshore rate if you come into Thailand with Travellers' Cheques, as the conversion occurs inside Thailand with a Thai bank as the counterparty.
