Mel...well spotted on that one...what about the billions handed out in the Aussie budget we going up or down long term?.. Barra....I was in LOS in December and got 30.2 baht to the $A... in April I got 27.2....my pocket calculator tells me that if I had taken A$ 20k and converted it to baht in Dec and then converted it back in April...just on 4 months...I'd have A$ 22,205....11% increase....that Thai bank account sounds like a good hedge bet. I'd tell you to "Enjoy" but it sounds like you are doing that already...Bastard!

It's a nightmare for us Bloody Americans.....37????/ Say again. My first trip was near 45. It doesn't seem like much but moved into a new place and had some unforseen large emegency withdrawls and I lost hundreds of dollars last week just because of a 3 lowsy Baht shift. This sucks....I pray that Mel is wrong on the further movements. I will have no fun money left soon if this it comes true.

Budget handouts should see a further interest rate hike within 6 months,, should see the Aus dollar back over 30 BHT. If I had US dollars I would be getting out ( short / medium ) term,, bottom looks like around 35 / 35.5 BAHT. I cannot see the Aus dollar going much above 30 BHT ( assuming the BAHT stays reasonably steady ) as Aus is a commodity seller and cannot afford the prices of our goods ( iron ore etc etc ) to get too pricy. Cheers

I must admit it is nice to see the Americans squirm a little,,,,,, Remember when the AUS $ got US$1.48 !!!!! And it was only a few years back it dropped to 50cents US,,,,,,things go in cycles.

Don't worry. Bush Jr., or his cabinet, will be thrown out in 2007 and the dollar will strengthen again. LOL! I think the Japanese will intervene real soon as their "recovery" is making their stock market tank like mad. Not a sign of a recovery to me, but serious deflation at its worst coming like a rocket, only to be "told" a different story for as long as possible. By the way, someone wrote on Stickman's column this week about the "strong economy" in Thailand as a lie coming from the Banks as companies aren't paying off debts (like advertisers not paying newspapers for ad space) and a 1997 crash is coming again. I tend to lean towards that front line assessment, myself, if true. I also don't see how a strong Baht could stick around with no government and hotel room rate inflation (anyone see the Conrad jump from $89.00 to $189.00? Someone remind them it is Bangkok and the rate is $89.00). Gyaos.

The problem with most governments and economies is that they sail their ships like the Titanic full speed ahead and eventually they hit the iceberg and sink very fast. Thailand is wearing very rosy glasses right now. The writing is on the wall and at the end of any hype are things that happen that are more absurd. With no government most big infrastructure projects are in a state of limbo. Fuel costs has dramatically increased the cost of both construction and farming and Thailand is already loosing contracts to lower cost exporters. With the rise of interest rates home buying is being curtailed and current home owners are faced with higher interest rates on their home loans. High-end condos sales are grinding down and the only exception seems to be the real estate market in Phuket. But all these factors take time to work through the pipeline. History will repeat itself again and again and again. So by the end of this year, the holes in the dykes will start to be flowing. Thailand has already slipped in the world market and I cannot see them making any improvements without a government. From the news article "Thailand's ranking in world competitiveness has slipped five places this year, from 27th to 32nd, out of 61 countries in the survey." http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2006/05/16/business/business_30004125.php So not only is the Thailand economy riding the Titanic, but the Titanic has no captain. Meanwhile the party goes on board the deck. Thanksfornuttin is a smart man and I am looking for him to start moving his mass wealth out of the THB into another currency so by year's end I am predicting 45 THB/Dollar.

The Thai economy is becoming increasingly dependant on China ( and its continuing growth).. What was once seen as a threat to Thailand has in fact been an export BOOM. It is true that increasing oil prices have decreased the outlook for growth but an estimated 6% growth this year is a better than good result. But those petro dollars are also being re-couped by large increases in Middle eastern tourists visiting Thailand ( a quick walk down Sukumvit soi 4 will confirm this) The cross rates in general for the BAHT will more than likely be mostly effected by interest rates,, increasing interest rates normally lead to firmer currencies but I do not see that coming in the current economic climate in Thailand. So a gradual but small weakening of the BAHT could be expected.Cross rates against the US$ will steady or fall as the US$ looses favour due to economic problems there. But if you are looking at Euro,Pound, Yen, AUD etc verses BAHT things look ok. Just one economic opinion. Cheers

So I think we should all try to guess the THB exchange rate at year's end and see who is the closest. We cannot do worse than the economist's LOL. Anyhow I agree with your China comments and in fact the cost of engineering in China and many other industries is exceeding the costs in Thailand. However, I do not think the Middle Eastern people are adding that much extra to the Thai economy. They certainly aren't spending it on clothes and I heard the the storis from the BG's that they like to bar fine a girl take her back their hotel room then share her among their friends in an orgy. Talk about your cheap charlies.
