For the amount that you are talking about I think an offshore banking arrangement in Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey or somewhere similar might be your best option. I'm not in the financial services business, but I understand that there are different ways to set up these accounts for call or time deposit which attract varying interest rates. I think some of these offshore banks will also supply you with credit card/ATM access so you can get to your money whenever you want.
If you haven't got any specific recommendations just search "offshore banking" in google and you should get a good selection to have a look at.
Failing that, I've heard that ccvvbb is setting up The Pussy Voucher Offshore Savings Bank for forum brothers wanting to keep their hard earned money away from prying eyes.

HSBC offers what you want : your money is safe offshore in Jersey, you have internet access for monitoring and you can withdraw anytime by transfers, checks, ...etc.
Minimum deposit is quite low compared to Swiss banks/private banking.

For that small amount, the LOS is just as safe (as long as you stick with Thai Farmers Bank or Bangkok Bank)assuming you're going to be hanging out here.
There's an IRS type system here... but it has virtually no triggers (like in the US) for an audit (according to my relatives at various banks). You can trickle in amounts into multiple accounts in 200-300k Baht a day and it looks like regular Thai business activity. Just look at all the Thais in your typical bank branch... people are depositing million Baht bricks of cash (producing them from half torn manila envelopes, Central bags, etc.) everyday and it's just regular business. You walk into a Frost Bank in Texas and they raise an eyebrow (and cc: the IRS by law) if you have $10k+ in cash.
I've never known ANYONE who has been audited in the LOS. That includes people who have been living and born here in the 1930's.
Although not "officially" considered an offshore sanctuary for your moolah (ie. no one mentions it in Hollywood movies)... in practice and reality, it most certainly is for many.

If you want to deposit your money in Switzerland because of the bank secret, I would not recommend you to do so as it is not so strict as everybody thinks. In addition to this you will need to present a written proof of the money's origin.
If you really want to take full advantage of the bank secret and/or you have dirty money, it might be wiser to choose a bank on the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg or Austria.

Your right about auditing, as the LOS system is considered a cash basis system, whereas he U.S.A. and other systems are credit/electronic based. That's why the U.S. has $10K audit triggers on our banks (that and the stupid narco-RICOH laws). It would be inappropriate to have triggers in Thai banks at the $10K USD level, because so much of business is done in LOS on a cash basis.
