I can't really understand why someone who is on a 7 day trip to BKK (even if they returned several times) would want to open a bank account. Travelers checks are the way to go if someone does not want to carry the cash on them.

Hi guys, about transfering money to Thailand, all you guys are getting screwed by your banks for the transfer fee. In my country prices are different at every bank some expensive some dirt cheap. The biggest amount i ever transferred was 4.000 Euro (196.000 Baht ,at the time the rate was 49baht=1 euro) I paid 16 euro(=18 dollar) transfer costs. My advice shop around for a good price, I did. It's not worth going through the hassle changing banks to get a better transfer rate if you only do it occasionally.

My last trip took some emergency cash kept with passport and just used my UK switch card at ATM's to draw money direct from my UK Current account cost arround 1% Allways worked and 100% safe.

For reasonable exchange rate try out this licensed money changer, Siam Exchange Tel:022164782. Just next to MBK Complex in Pathumwan intersection. It is on Phayathai Road. I have seen many locals in this shop.
