AlterEgo, One of the accounts I opened at BOA was a joint account with my, that time, TG. Thought it was easy to have her access to any funds for payments as rent, phone bills etc. I was feeding this account via my saving accounts from which I could transfer funds via internet banking. Just as a tip, do not have more funds in your joint account than you are willing to spend! Manuel.

The Thai banks are inconsistent about the requirement for a WP to open (or even renew) any sort of account for a farang. Sometimes they require, sometimes they don't. In my experience the foreign banks are very consistent about this, they ALWAYS require a work permit to be shown. This WP thing was imposed by Bank of Thailand (the central bank) as part of a supposed clampdown on "money laundering" which is of course a crock of shit. The major "money launderer" in recent years being Thaksin Shinawatra the PM.

'The major "money launderer" in recent years being Thaksin Shinawatra the PM.' Wise words Sauron........ ------------------------ After reading many of the comments I feel a kind of lucky that I was able to do so easy business with my bank. Especially since I am not a full-time resident and have no work permit. Good luck to all who try to open an account!!

I've done some checking and as Sauron says, it is Bank of Thailand policy, so unless you can find a friendly bank manager willing to close one eye, you will need a work permit to open a personal bank account. Manuel, many thanks for the PM. I'll let you know how it goes.

I just opened a bank account at Bangkok Bank today, no WP required, passport only for a savings account and ATM card. However if you want a cheque account you need a WP.

Happened to use the ATM at Siam City Bank (corner of Sukhumvit Soi 3/1), and I saw a sign that welcomes foreigners to open accounts there. Hop over there! Then hop over to Gulliver's.

RR, the branch in Suanplu, Sathorn soi 3, on the same side as 'park suanplu' apartments and just a few doors up towards immigration. There was no problem at all to open it, about 10 minutes, the most painful thing was about 30 odd signatures required, sign this sign that. ATM card cost 300 baht, but it is one you can use to buy stuff, I presume the same as eftpos facilities back home and minimum deposit was 500baht, also accessible overseas so they say.
