The problem here is that if the baht goes back up to 25 on the dollar, don't expect prices to come down. My guess is that if this happened the prices would just remain level for a very long time.

Some US banks will offer free traveller's checks if you have like a billion accounts with them, so look into that. ÝYou certainly don't want to get travellers checks and then get an exchange rate rip off from your own kind.
US BANKS **RIP OFF** AMERICANS and any foreigner that uses their service. ÝWhat happens is the following:
- The US Teller knows NOTHING about anything that happens outside the US border, therefore they will know NOTHING about the currency you ask for. Ý"Mam, may I have THAI BAHT for a $1000.00??" ÝShe/He will say "Where's that country??"
in an egotistical attitude.
- The Bank higher ups that do know what is outside the US purposely seperate the buy/sell rate in a greater ratio that will cost you $100.00 per $1000.00 just to exchange the cash, the teller goes by the computer exchange value and you get ripped off. ÝGuess who gets the cash??
So don't use them.
Tokyo has excellent exchange rates for their yen.....but not the other way for dollars. ÝSo I recommend to keep the yen. It has more value.
If "newbie" meant something different, I stand corrected.

ok, time for another LOS virgin question... for instance, if i bring $5,000USD in travelers cheques to BKK airport exchange... is it safe to walk around with $211,000baht in your pocket?? Should I convert it into Thai travellers cheques? Does such a thing even exist?
Do I hide this money in a hotel safe?
Basically, as you all know, I am moving to BKK on the 25th... I have dedicated the next 2 weeks to learning and planning the whole financial side of things during this period =)

kmanrox, once you get here, get yourself a bank account. You can try a foreign bank like Bank of Asia (since they have many branches compared to HSBC or CitiBank), and you will get your ATM card immediately. That way, you will have your peace of mind.

thx for the advice... but isnt there like a 500$ a day cash limit from the ATM's ? I use a platinum Bank of America card and it is 500/max...
I will get a local bank account as soon as I get in... This may sound lame, but I would assume they have checking accounts with checks that are valid in LOS if I opened an account with bank of asia? i'm assuming so, but if i didnt ask, that would be the exception... that is the way my luck works =)

the actual limit in thailand is thb 10,000 on the atm machines. nevertheless if you do not party like crazy this will help you over the day until the next day.
if you feel this is not enough for you i guess you have 2 or more credit cards plus your soon to be opened local atm card. that gives you at least about thb 30,000 every day on the machines. this way i never had a cash problem here if when i got to excessive with a couple of cuties!
man, this is a lot of money in bangkok for a day! consider what the average salary in thailand is!
p.s. when you hit bank of asia try to open a current account and not a savings account. this way you will also get cheques and the possibility for a local credit card after six months!
