What has always stumped me about the low wages in Thailand is how can the Thai people afford to pay off a mortgage, buy a car, buy a new TV, DVD player, computer etc etc??
The prices for some of these items appear to be about the same as Western prices, yet wages are much lower.
How does 5000 - 10,000 baht per month extend any further than basic living expenses?? Or perhaps only the upper class can afford these items while the lower and middle class miss out altogether??
Can someone shed light on this please.

Easy ... like their western counterparts keeping up luxurious lifestyles.
Borrowing from banks, friends, family or loan sharks ... But also filling holes in one hand with the other ... credit cards , instant money loans .....paying off in monthly terms .....
Even with a low income you can borrow quite easily in Thailand ... that is if you're Thai and have somebody the provide a guarantee ....

The vast majority of people making 5 to 10k don't have these things. The middle class do, but they make substantially more than that (and even those making 20K-30K certainly aren't going to have car, house, full entertainment system, ...) unless their parents are kicking in.

Thai's are also amazing penny pinchers. They don't waste anything. They'll keep rubber bands and plastic bags from their take out food. Entire households will spend the evening hours together so they only have to spend electricity lighting one room.
Buying a 40 baht latte or taking the taxi/skytrain/ac bus are luxuries these people never indulge in.
And of course, if they're cute, they can sideline to supplement the income.
