Thanks for the replys (most of them anyhow).
I guess my main concern is cost of living.
What is an estimated equivilant of 300,000 baht a month to US dollars. One reply stated that that is the same as 400,000. US dollars a year. Is this true?

You can't really make a comparison like that... There's a steep drop-off in terms of back-for-one's-buck once one begins to earn a higher level salary.

By that I mean you don't *need* to spend much money here. You can live in a studio in a very nice building for US$400/month, eat at restaurants every meal spending $15 a day, and go to bars and shag girls spending another $400 a month. Thus you could earn US$2000 a month and be able to live a very good lifestyle. So if you're earning US$7500 a month you can bank the difference.

But it's when you want to start adding perks that costs escalate. Cars here are expensive- had I bought my car new it'd have cost me almost US$60,000, twice the price for the same thing back home. There are studio apartments in Bangkok for US$1750 in a more prestigious building. One can blow US$600 with a few friends during 4 hours in Caribbean. A dual session in Poseidon with drinks and food can top US$350. Wine is expensive, luxury goods (clothes, watches, etc) are heavily taxed, and so on.

So you can't say that US$90k a year here is like US$400k as you won't be able to buy the toys/assets you would had you been earning that much money back home. Really depends on what you value (how important it is to live here vs traveling here) and what net savings opportunities you have in both places.

Cheers!

I've only worked in the US, how do taxes work for US cits in Thailand or any other country? With Soc, Fed, City, and local taxes i'm getting close to 50%. So for say $400,000 US income how much do you get to get after Income, Property, and Sales taxes? I didn't Calc the number, but my gut feeling is that a 2x-4x buying power in Thailand is not far off, but I have never lived there only visited 3 times. Many here are much more knowledgeable about this subject then I.

As a falang from the states living here it depends on how you are contracted to work. The first time I worked over here in Thailand was in 95. I was paid in the states and everthing was as normal per US taxes etc..

The second time I worked over in Thailand I worked out of a "body shop" in Thailand. At the time what they did was pay us 80,000 baht through the Thai portion of their company and I paid 30% in taxes on that portion. Tdhe remainder of the time was billed to the international portion of their company and the money was wire transfered in to my bank with no taxes withheld. I don't worry about SS and taxes in the states.

I didn't Calc the number, but my gut feeling is that a 2x-4x buying power in Thailand is not far off, but I have never lived there only visited 3 times. Many here are much more knowledgeable about this subject then I.

Anyone with a disposeable income in the 300,000 baht per month range can live quite nice. After you have been in Thailand for awhile you tend to slow down a little bit or you wind up killing youself. Also you will be working and that might limit how much you spend to a certain degree, so you want be out till 4:00 in the morning everday.

Items if purchased over here can be quite expensive cars, etc.., however it is cheaper to rent. Most companies furnish cars, drivers, etc. Your "big ticket" item is going to be entertainment.

Wow,

I was a bit taken aback that some posters seemed uncertain whether you could survive and have a good time in BKK on a measly 300k/mth.

Let me give you one acquaintance's monthly baseline expenditure.

Car 30k
House 37k
Club 6k
Food 5k
Drink 10k
Spending money 10k

Call it a round 100k/mth. This is a normal month when not travelling but living very well in the centre of town driving an expensive car. The rest of income goes to savings, investments etc. or large ticket purchases.

Trust this is useful. However I have a friend on 300k/mth tax free who blows it every month. But you should see some of the women.......

I love this thread.

I'm in bangkok at the moment and have just negotiated my deal to relocate here from Sydney. I'm coming over for 375,000 a month after tax. The beauty of the deal for me (coming from hypertaxed Australia) is that the net amount is 25% more than what I clear in Sydney and about 12% less gross cost to the company. Everyone's a winner.

The first one is on me!

yes, but try and limit your "nights out without a chaperone" when you first get there...

otherwise you might lose that sweet deal job.

i've seen it, most of us have seen it.

Sun-Thurs, don't stay out too late, and get your BG out in time for work...

Fri & Sat, go for it, but don't try to continue on Sunday evening.

must have limits, and trust me, it's difficult, til you've been here long enough to adjust...

The USA taxes income for US citzens no matter where it is earn. Even if you renouce your American Citizenship you are liable for USA taxes up to ten years after that date. (Please remember it is a free country)

Thailand taxes all income earned in Thailand, and this gets to be a big percentage after a certain level. It is best to arrange things where you are making a decent, but not excessive Thai salary and the rest of the income is paid to from the USA company to a US Bank account which you can use an ATM to withdrawl here.

Now the USA tax law allows you up to $80,000 exclusion right off of the top. There are two ways to qualify for this either by residing here for around 340 days or moving your residency to Thailand.

Additionally, you still can claim Schedule A deductions and since you reduced your gross by 80K you can exceed the percentage limitations say on medical expenses easily.

Additionally you get a certain percent tax CREDIT for the foreign tax paid to Thailand.

If it sounds complicated it is and you should have a professional prepare your tax forms. I have legally reduced my total effective tax rate including social security to 15% from 50%

What's cheaper in Thailand:

Food usually 50% across the board
Medical 10>20% of USA pricing
Women but you tend to have more of them so they actually eat up more money
Gas (A little bit less tax & Thai Sub.)
Cell Phone Charges about 50%, but you talk twice as long to all the TG so it equals the same

Same:
Dry Cleaning (Can't figure that one)
Housing
Insurance
Electricity

More Expensive
Cars A lot
Electronic Goods a little bit
Wine A lot

In conclusion, effectivly I am living exactly the same lifestyle as in the USA execpt I able to eat at nicer places more often and party with young girls which would be impossible in the USA unless you are a millionaire or Brad Pitt.

So if partying, food and women are not a priority in your life it is better to just stay in the USA.

BT 300,000 - no way not even close to being enough.

Poseidon etc. = 30 days x 2 sideliners + booze and tips?? its already history! Although you could take the new subway to save on transportation costs.

Either get your ex to find a job or ask for BT 600,000 per month!

either you're joking, or you don't live in LOS

i'm betting on joking...

once you get an MP gal you like, sponsor her to stay with you.

then you get it all.

laundry, done !
cooking, done !
sucking, done !
fvcking, done !

there's a heap of expenses out of the way.

and if she's got a motorbike, you can save money on the trek to work every day...
