I really don't understant why she did try it.....she knows I am no rookie and I even made jokes about all the sick buffalos and other stuff just to let her know I was aware of all the tips&tricks.....still, instead of enjoying nice time, fine meals, some shopping and reasonable cash for the time invested, she came out with such cliche'.....I felt very disappointed....only after few days our relationship began to take the right direction.....
Btw, the next is gonna be a "good girl", real student (no, I'm not borrowing from LY!!!)......show must go on!

been with thai farmers at rangsit for years got visa and net banking (not easy) recently opened bkk bank Klong tan no problem passport only and 50 k the rules are made up as they go along THANK GOD

Visited 3 or 4 banks in order to open an a/c and was told by every single one that I need a work permit & non imm' b visa to open an a/c.
I then went to bangkok bank and opened a new a/c within 10 mins of arriving and got a visa electron card within 5 days ( cost 300b per year ) !
Avoid the bullshit banks and head straight to bangkok bank. You can also open a foreign currency a/c to avoid further devaluation of thai baht and convert whatever you need whenever you want.....
Great service all round !

Yep, I can confirm Spurs Man's experience.
Forget Standard Chartered Bank, Bank of Asia.
Was going to try Siam City Bank, but nobody seemed interested in serving.
Bangkok Bank, gets the thumbs up.

Having gone through the experience in the last couple of weeks, I can confirm all of this.
During my idle time, I walked into several banks in Sukhumvit, looking to open an account. Here's what happened:
Siam Commercial soi 11. I told them I have work permit and they ushered me in, chucked an application form (in thai) at me and left me to it. Noone seemed interested in helping this ignorant farang, so I got up and left in disgust. Bugger that.
Pretty much the same thing happened at Kasikorn on soi 3. No help. No advice. No custom from scobie as a result.
Off to Standard Chartered on soi 3 where they looked supremely disinterested. I was told that even though I had work permit I would need to be here two years before I could open account (WTF!!!!?) unless I knew an existing customer who could vouch for me.
In the end I called my office and asked them to intervene and help me out.
30 minutes later, I get a call from a branch manager of the Bangkok Bank in our office on Rama 4. "Khun Scobie, please to come see me for coffee and I'm sure I can help you."
Sorted. Cheque account, internet banking and application for credit card pending. The guy even (true story) discovered I was single and showed me a picture of his eldest (mai narak) daughter. Now THAT is service.

I opened a bank account last month with just a passport, no work permit, no Thai wife.
It was quick and effortless. My method was to have a Thai lawyer handle the details. Yes, he charged a fee.
He drove me to the bank. Introduced me to the branch manager - smiles all around. Very soon I walked out with a new bank book and an ATM card. It was effortless.
The lawyer's fee for bank account opening was 3,000 baht. That fee included the "tea money" paid because I don't have a work permit. I did not ask for details.
I recommend this lawyer. His specialty is visa mattersor expats. He lived for some years in an English-speaking country, so his English is very good. If you want to make contact, send a private message to me with your regular email address - I will reply by email.
