Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 8 January 2007 :- Police bust fake credit card gang ========================= Authorities have arrested three men from Sri Lanka and seized more than 5,000 apparently fake credit cards encoded with real data, police said Sunday. The arrests were actually made last Tuesday in Phuket, after police received tipoffs that the Sri Lankans were acting suspiciously by repeatedly withdrawing small amounts of money at ATMs at banks on several Phuket beaches. Pol Lt Col Boonlert Ongklang said officers seized 1,750 credit cards from the suspects' rental car, and later found thousands more at their hotel - a total of 5,350 cards. About 2,300 of the fake cards had been encoded with genuine credit card data from England, he said, adding that if all 5,350 cards were being used the men could have withdrawn up to 400 million baht, the equivalent of $11 million. "They smuggled codes from credit cards which were issued in England, not cards issued in Thailand," he said. Boonlert said he believed that a gang in England was stealing credit card information there and feeding it to Thailand to be encoded on the fake cards, which were manufactured outside Thailand and brought in by members of the gang. Two of the detained Sri Lankan men were regular visitors to Thailand, he said, while the third arrived from England on the day of his arrest. The third man has dual nationality of Sri Lanka and England according to his travel documents. All three were charged with making and using fake credit cards, and face a maximum of 15 years in jail.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 2 February 2007 :- Frenchmen used latest technology in ATM-card fraud ================================== Among techniques used by criminals operating cash-card frauds, a new method used recently in Chon Buri is dangerously effective, police warn. Two French suspects - Tachefini Smaine, 20, and Alexandre Guasmia, 21 - allegedly used a small device known as a skimmer to copy information from cards and create cloned cards immediately. Tourist Police commander Maj-General Panya Mamen said the men targeted rich-looking and seemingly English-speaking people and obtained their cards' PIN by watching their victims key them into ATM machines. Sometimes they identified the four-digit codes from a distance through zoomed-in images recorded from a video camera operated by one of the suspects. The other man then used his con skills to obtain cards from holders at the ATM machines by approaching them and inventing a story. For example, that he had problems with his own card and wanted to see another card to compare whether the problems stemmed from the same sources of information stored in embedded chips or magnetic strips. When handed cards by clueless holders, one man used the skimmer - the size of a cigarette in length and a car key in thickness - to copy information from the chips or strips and returned the cards. After obtaining the PIN and holders' information from the cards, they were able to produce clones almost immediately. Panya said the two Frenchmen had exploited Thai generosity towards foreigners in trouble. They allegedly used cloned cards in Thailand and sold others to people in Europe. It was the first time anyone had been detected using a skimmer in Thailand, and the type of skimmer they used was one of the smallest models in the world, said Panya. The commander said tourist police began investigating the case after cardholders complained to the Thai Bankers' Association that their cards had been charged for use in Europe, even though they had never been there before. Police said the men were arrested in front of a Chon Buri bank last week while approaching an ATM user. Panya said the rich were primarily selected because they tended not to check their accounts regularly, making long-term withdrawals of small amounts of money difficult to detect.

Well it just happened to me went to wire some money and shock and horror I found that $5k had been cleaned out of my dollar bank account in a shopping spree in Paris - France. I only use this card when traveling so the last time was in BKK several purchases and used it for all the Hotels. Had a French mate call up the shop on the statement and they said it a was a card purchase so the card was cloned. Good news is that the money and charges have been refunded by bank 100% but no explanation on how it could have happened. Waiting for a mail from their fraud guys but I think next time I'll stick to cash or chip and pin if they have it out there?

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 24 August 2007 :- Malaysian woman credit scammer arrested in Hatyai ====================================== Railway police in Hat Yai have arrested a 29-year-old Malaysian woman, charging she tried to smuggle more than 100 fake credit cards into southern Thailand. The Malaysian news agency Bernama quoted Hat Yai railway police deputy chief Mahuntapol Srinot as saying the woman was found with the fake credit cards on the Butterworth-Bangkok express train. Mahuntapol said they made the arrest after being tipped off that a woman passenger would be carrying illegal material into the country from Malaysia. He said a police team led by Hat Yai railway police chief Aukkapak Jitprayoon boarded the train when it stopped in Hat Yai at about 6:45pm on Wednesday evening. “Upon checking her bag, we found a plastic bag which contained the fake credit cards, allegedly issued by most of the commercial banks in Thailand,” he added. The team also found 5,000 baht, which the woman told them was the payment for delivering the credit cards to Bangkok. Several Malaysians have been arrested by Thai police this year for using fake credit cards to buy goods at popular shopping malls in the capital. Last year, a Malaysian was caught stealing credit card information from a Bangkok bank.
