On my last trip back in February, I was able to avoid the 150 Baht fee charged by most Thai banks, by using Bank of Ayudhya machines to withdraw cash. I have heard that Bank of Ayudhya are now also charging 150Baht for each ATM transaction. My debit card is with UK's Nationwide. Looks like I will be going back to either Bangkok Bank or Siam Commercial as their ATMs are usually more abundant.

Not really a post about a fee increase, that happened long ago. Just a funny ATM experience last trip. I went to use the ATM at Kasikorn bank on lower Suk on a Saturday about 10pm. I was aware of the bt150 fee so tried to get bt5000. It wouldn't accept that amount, I knew I had the money, so I tried bt3000, same response. Finally I tried to get bt2000, and it finally gave me money, but it was all in bt100 notes....lolol. I have a feeling I was the last customer to get money out of that ATM for the rest of the weekend.....lolol. First time I've ever been given bt100 notes, bt500 notes many times, but a first with bt100's....lolol.

Why not just go to a different ATM? There's at least a dozen more ATMs within 500 meters of that location. I always withdraw the maximum, usually 20,000 Baht, from the ATMs, in order to amortize the charges.

500m? No way! There is one within 100 m or less, especially in lower Sukhumvit area. Bangkok has the most ATM machines than any other city. The maximum you can withdraw at any time is from Bangkok Bank's ATM machines. They give out 25,000 B each time but you need to enter the amount manually.

The ones in Panthip Plaza always give me 20,000 Baht a pop. My bank allows me to make up to 5 ATM withdrawals a day, which generally works out just fine. Alternatively, I just transfer a big chunk of change to my Siam Commercial Bank account, and then subsequent withdrawals have no charges associated with them.

Did you need to show a work permit in order to open an account with Siam Commercial Bank? Having a local bank account is the best way to go.

I have a work permit, and it was an account associated with the business. I also have a Bangkok Bank account, which did not require a WP, just my passport.

This has happened to me too, but at the bank up in the village. It has happened more than once. There is a limit on the number of notes you can take out in an ATM withdrawal. I think it might be 20 notes (hence the 2000THB in 100THB notes that you experienced Koolbreeze). So I wonder if it is a new ploy by the Thai banks to extract more charges from farangs. As this forces farangs who might want to withdraw 5K or 10K to make additional withdrawals.

Supposedly, there are at least 2 banks that do not charge the 150 ATM fee. It will still be some months before I will be back to verify. Aeon and Citibank. Neither are members of the Thai Bankers association which instituted the fee. There should be an Aeon in the Nana BTS. Citi has 24 hour ATMs in the Citibank Tower, Interchange 21 Building. I believe there is a sky walk from the Asoke BTS.
