The newest parts of town are in the suburbs and Thonburi and you don't want to be way out there.

As previously explained there is no nicest part of town. It's a jumbled checkerboard of very expensive real estate cheek to jowl with emptry trashed filled lots ( equals rats) and slums (equals construction workers) and (duh!) buildings under construction.

For the budget you have outlined you can get a LARGE single house with a LARGE yard in a QUIET neighborhood, gated without any through traffic, and still be within 15 minutes of the nightlife by taxi. Or Skytrain. I live like that and I'm close to Mo Chit. But it's faster to call in a radio taxi and jump on the expressway and get off at Ploenchit.

An expensive apartment, or a condo, is a money pit.

My rent is < $700 US, you are budgeting $1800?

kman,
You seem to be a bit slow to get the drift my good man. Is it that you can't quite believe what you're hearing? Surely not -- with all the expertise of some very knowledgeable brothers being offered to you.
1) There is no nicest part of town.
2) The cost of living is fairly cjheap compared to US (as per various prices qouted to you in posts.)
3) It seems to me that you cancertainly live here VERY comfortably.  Affleuent by your standards? I don't know. Able to live in a very nice home and have a very good time pretty much every night- IMO- definitely.
Not trying to talk you into anything man, but if you want to do it, you can. Jump.

I'm thinking about moving to Thailand in the end of this year and live with my TG. In the first period (until I'll find a job or open my own business)I'll have 35,000 Baht per month . Is that enough to survive in BKK?

More than enough, if you live frugally and in the Thai economy. That means a smallish furnished apartment, eating mostly Thai food -- there is plenty of variety to suit anyone's tastes -- and not going too too crazy in the booze and pussy departments.

Figure 10,000 a month for apartment incl utilities, 15,000 a month for food (that's 500 baht a day), that leaves you 10,000 for everything else.

If you have some reserves for emergencies you will be OK. This isn't a budget to have a lot of fun on, you know.

If you want to live someplace luxurious.  There's a place opening up the end of this year.  A bit pricey but real nice called "Conrad"

Conrad is a new hotel and also serviced apartment same group as Hilton.  The hotel is managed by All Seasons Place. (Wireless Road)

The price starts at 32,800 for a studio. (36 SQ Metre)
1 Bed Room (54 SQ Metre) = 47,200 B.
1 Bed Room (67 SQ Metre) = 54,500 B.
2 Bed Room (91 SQ Metre) = 68,000 B.
2 Bed Room (108 SQ Metre) = 78, 500 B.

I know it's very expensive....but it's quite nice as I went there last week and saw for myself.

SS, could you recommend anything somewhat  luxurious in the 2 bedroom, 1000-1200$ USD per month?  (42,5k - 51k baht)?

just in case some of you reading this post are a little daunted by the prices thrown around and are wondering what happened to cheap asia!
I pay 5,000 baht a month for my apartment on soi 22 and eat thai food mainly and budget 200 baht a day for food. I have 2 girls that I don't pay for and spend about 700-1000 baht on drinks.
Sure if you've got the cash live like a king but I'm having a ball on around 35,000 a month.
On $us 2,500 I'd be in heaven.
I love the place and recommend the move.
cheers Robbo

Oh, it's not a question of being daunted, it's more like being astonished at how some people elect to waste money. Kmanrox is going to end up paying twice for a 2 BR apt than I pay for a 5 BR two storey house with a 100 m2 living room --  that's bigger by iyself than the largest apartment quoted above -- on 800+ m2 of land, in Bangkok not more than 15-20 minutes away from Sukhumvit by taxi or Sky Train.

The trick is NOT to assume that you have to spend the same sort of money to rent an APARTMENT as you do in the States or Europe. Don't be chumps, unless your rent is being underwritten by some corporate tax writeoff, or some wasteful government agency squandering taxpayer dollars, in which case, I will shake my head and mutter to myself for different reasons -- but go right ahead and knock yourselves out.

Heed the word of chateau!  Read that post again and think!  You can live like an upper middle class Thai or an upper middle class falang; The same lifestyle but one is much cheaper than the other - you figure out which it is.
