the majority of the 'islanders' do not want to 'embrace it',we are happy with sterling,as we have been with for many (hundreds) of years, but in it's many forms.
inperial and decimal.

yes i may whimmer and squirm over this matter because i do not have a say in the matter, which is wrong.
we have elections and a government is voted in on THEIR promises.
but we all know they lie.

the conversion rate between between sterling and the euro is not difficult really, just the principle.
our government refuses to hold a referendum on the matter, they know full well the euro would be tossed aside and sterling would be the choice of the masses.

but who are the masses?,only idiots who believe the party political broadcasts.

i have'nt a clue what a euro looks like or what it's smaller coinage looks like.
but show mw a franc/guilder/mark and i would be so much at home.

and i must admit i take offence to the 'backward brit' reference Griffin.
some of the brits may be a bit stupid(and i know a few,and i have been accused of this many times),but some of the people i met in the Appalachians and Ozark mountains defy believe.

but the question of the UK giving up Sterling?.
what would happen if it was decided that the US Dollar was scrapped in favour of the Mexican Peso?.
would the American public just say 'oh never mind,we'll get over it'?

YEAH RIGHT.

You right, they never would. But they are all alike... same old anglo saxon colonial pride that doesn't allow them to change to something that is coming from the outside.

The USA still to this day refuses to go metric/decimal. If only young children in the USA knew how much easier their lives would be at school if they were taught in metric .... But didn't England change to metric many many  years ago? So if it could why can't the USA? Oh well, I guess it was an exceptional case of their pride being low at the time due to the demotion from "Empire" to "Kingdom" and the humiliation at Suez.

PSSST! nokna is a brit!!!

do not get me wrong i am fully with you!!! if it would be up to me i would still like to keep me 'Deutsche Mark' but we weren't asked.
now it is too late and europe can not turn back the time! as the uk will also not be able to do if you would not want to loose the contact to the continent!

brothers we all embrace you on the titanics called € and $!!!

oooooohhhhh Smegma.
never use the colonial/Empire line.
i,as a Brit would never EVER mention this.
all that bullshit is offensive in my eyes,it makes me think of slave trading(which in the past we were very good at),oppression of 3rd world countries(we were the top dogs at that) and of course the loss of the US.

just think, the Union Flag might be flying above the White house even now....

and no,we did not change to metric years ago.
those lovely faceless people in Europe gave us some consessions and at the moment we are allowed to stay imperial.
but our Government wants to make us think otherwise.

recently our top law chiefs(judges) have expressed the opinion that people who burgle our houses are unfortunates.
they should not be jailed, the law abiding amongst us should feel sorry for them.
even someone who went to court admitting over 200 burglaries was set free.

but if you try and sell a POUND of banana's,the CRIMINALS are dragged to court, fined and threatened with prison if they do not pay the fine of £?????.
which is the worst crime?.

we still use inches, feet, yards and miles in the UK.
all road signs from my house to London are in Miles, not Kilometres.

who knows the saying 'give them an inch and they will take a mile'?,common usage.
but can i imagine myself saying 'give them a centimetre and they will take a kilometre'?
not on your nelly.
but the kids are being taught metric in the school these days and eventually it will take us over.

i take the piss about converting imperial to metric, but really i have no problems with it.
i'm lucky to have a sort of photographic mind,i remember names, faces events etc with no trouble, that's why when i posted my FR's,i posted them with much clarity.
i remember things.

and in the same vein,i have a good mathematical mind.
i love numbers and have no problem converting prices from sterling to euros/francs/marks guilders/dollars yen etc.

i just object to my elected government trying to force the euro on me,i should have a say.

sorry if i've gone way off topic, but this matter gets to me.

I'll stick to USD, if it's ok with all of you. In the future if something will make for a change and, i'm still alive, i'll try to deal with it then. God forbid it's going from USD to Mexican Peso Now as far as inches& feet-metric&decimal, well sure it's easier with metric but, you cant cheat any one out of their hard earned money with it. See years ago you could go to the lumber mill and buy a 2x4 inch and say 10 foot long board. Now you go and, you ask for that same measurement and, guess what you get? It's more like 1-3/4x3-1/2 or so. Because of the cull factor, you always get your 10 foot plus but, you sure can dickem easier every other way. So it's not so PRIDE as it's just plain ole' good BUISNESS SENSE...

that is the reason why people living in a country such as the USA have the advantage.
they have no-one trying to change their ways.
they are not pressurised by other nations to adopt a new currency or new measurements.

what would happen if Central and South America ganged up on the USA and suggested they all have the same currency and the USA would be 'ruled' from Bogata and all the laws would be decided by Bogata?.

i can imagine the Americans reaction.

but the British Government just cave into Europe.
and these are the same people who refuse to back the USA and UK on the Iraq question.

I will stick to the USD as the EURO is said to cause itchy skin. But when going to LOS I am taking my own currency along both in TCs and cash.

Nokna ... heck no.  When you go metric you then change that saying to "give them a finger and they take the whole hand".  ;)

I wasn't too struck on the whole "euro" thing in the beginning... but now we've had it a year or so, I have seen the benifits and come round to liking it.

It's great knowing *exactly* how much you pay for that croissant in Paris or that souvlaki in Greece.... and no more having 3 or 4 different currencies in your purse when you drive through the continent.

BUT... what I think is down right wrong .. things have become much more expensive.  I don't know if this applies to all Euro countries, but it certainly applies here.  Businesses didn't keep their promises about not rounding amounts up.  Everything I can think of is more expensive since the Euro came in.... and have heard the same in other Euro countries.  I think the consumer association here said prices had gone up by an average of 10% in the intro year of the Euro.  Fine and dandy... but I didn't get a 10% pay rise!!!!

When the UK joins (sorry Nokna but I do think it isn't really a question of "if" the UK joins but "when") -- then I hope the government will take steps to make sure the "rounding up" crap that we've had to put up with, doesn't happen.

Another thing I like about the Euro... but that's not permanent ofcourse... is it makes counting in US dollars that much easier!

And no more worrying about how many drachmas or liras or pesos or francs or deutschemarks to the guilder.

I still keep making the mistake of tipping too much.  I forget the Euro has 2.2x more value than my old currency.  So when I think I am giving 5 guilders tip,  I am actually giving 12 guilders.  OUCH

Nokna, that's comparing apples and oranges.  The USA doesn't have a common social & economical policy with central and southern america... in the way that the UK has with mainland Europe.  (or rather with the EEC countries)

And just to clarify... I can see how you think Brussels makes laws that the UK has to live by... but... it's not like the UK's doesn't have a say in these law making procedures in Brussels.  It's not like Germany and France get round the table and say "ok lets piss the UK off today and impose such and such a law on them".
