Can I vote this as the most meaningless post on the entire forum? Sorry to sound grumpy, but if we're trading tips to get another.25 baht for a dollar, what on earth are we doing in bkk?
It's pretty straight forward really. My experience is that everywhere sells pretty much the same rates give or take a micro percentage. Why worry about losing 10 baht on a US$10 transaction?

I was worried that the other multi-billionaire financiers might get screwed by the lady at the Thai Military Bank Exchange Counter on Sukhumvit next time.
Another tip: Always count it as 1,000 Baht notes have a habit of sticking together or to her fingers.

Yeah, not an unusual situation. Both my buddy and I had $$$ changed to roughly 50,000. He came away from the experience with 1,000 Baht less than me.
I insisted on counting my money. He reacted to the teller indicating he move along as there were other people waiting behind.
Summary : Always count your money at the airport changers (or, simply don't use them), no matter how mnay people wait behind you. If you notice discrepancies, immediately ask to talk to a supervisor/manager.

Just use an ATM, and withdraw large quantities. The surcharge/fee is more than offset if you withdraw large quantities, and the convenience is worth it.

Good advice Harry. Money changers in airports around the world prey on the weary traveler. A well know fact. Mexico City and Manila are notorious for short changing travelers and although in six trips was attempted to ripped off only once in the Bangkok airport, I now have recently switched to using ATMs in the airport and for cash when in town. I am 5 for 5 in attempted ripoffs in the Mexico City Airport and each time I was wary enough to catch it and bring it to their attention. No apologies, no words, nothing, they just gave me the correct amount when I asked for it. Very brazen behavior on their part and almost certainly supported and condoned by airport management and securtiy who get their cut.

Yeah, not surprising - a buddy of mine advise that if this happens at the airport to immediately ask for a supervisor and file an official complaint, and the guy will get fired on the spot.
Honestly, it's not worth my hassles, and to be perfectly frank, considering the income situation of most Thais, the temptation is an understandable one - particularly in a position where tips are not really being given.

It is amazing that any of us travel with all the scams and ripoffs these days. I suppose they have always been around.
Let's see, I can't pay with a credit card ( at least in Pattaya ) because of the high rate of number skimming by hotel employees, and if I change money at the teller window at Don Muang I have to be careful to count every satang for fear of short changing. So, I have to pay the $2-3 fee for using the atm at the airport, and hope I have a secure place to store the money when I arrive at my destination. So, don't lose those 2 or 3 atm cards or you will be up the creek. Sorry if I sound a little pessimistic. It probably is not quite that bad I suppose.

I normally just count the big bills only and screw it if they take a couple hundred (Baht).
But no 500 or 1k note will slip by undetected...

Diddler, the answer is very simple. Bring traveler checks with you to cover your purchases. You can exchange them at Thai Banks (and branches) at very good exchange rates. If you loose them, you can get a refund, so your vacation will not be ruined. Be sure to carry your passport when you need to cash TC's.
When you arrive at the airport, only exchange enough money for one day until you can get to a bank. $100 should be enough, but maybe a bit more if you will pay for a cab directly to Pattaya. Even with the mediocre exchange rates at the airport, you can't loose very much if you only get a limited amount at the airport (and it will be easier to count).
Bring the ATM card and credit card just in case. Also, be sure to record the TC numbers in case you loose them. AMX TC are the best and at some banks you can get them for free (or else pay a 1% service charge).
