I think ThaiUp's thoughts are pointing in the right direction, though only showing a part of the 'Thai attitude towards relationship/money'.
Classic role models are still existing and so Thailand is a place where you have to prove yourself as an alpha- male. (Play or get played!)
This classic role model has the male being the one who is supposed to be the leading part, but also supposed the one to provide support and (financial) security.
The combination success/money works obviously in any culture, but in Thailand it will be expected from you.

Just try driving here to experience that warm and friendly attitude.
IMO: I'd rather have a driver yell or honk their horn at me, then possible take out a gun an "cap" me, or want to throw down. In general, I'd rather drive in Thailand then in LA.
We may agree to disagree......

it's not the repercussions you have to worry about when driving, it's the actual accident that will be caused by the local's disregard for defensive driving, laws, and just plain consideration of other humans.
They lose touch with reality when behind the wheel, and some have inverted personality behind the wheel, i.e. Great, friendly, patient in chats etc, but Horrible, Offensive, and in a fvck off big hurry to get everywhere when driving...
not as bad in BKK, but try PTTY, or Real upcountry

Having lived and driven in both, I take LA to drive in. They don't honk here in Thailand they just gas it up to ramming speed. Just take a look at the city buses, not a one that does not have multiple dents in them.

Just my newbie 2 cents about sponsoring...
I took a girl from Beer Garden and after our fun we had dinner at the open air seafood place right across the street. Some of her friends joined us, including a very pretty girl, well respected by the others. She had a Skandinavian sponsor for awhile, taking care of this beauty (little too round for my taste) followed by a marriege proposal. She has the proper visas, all paperwork ready, she is waiting for her plane ticket. At soi 7...oh well...she was looking at the falangs like any other girl. The nice part; on my last night at Nana disco she is there, all decked out, negotiating with a falang...
I heard it, I approached the group to say goodbye for them. She (and I think most of them) will do whatever she wants or likes or she think she needs to do while she is in Thailand, regardless how much money or what kind of support and promises she receives.

Please forgive my ignorance but has anyone thought of organizing a non-profit sponsorship consortium - putting these girls to work so they can learn a trade,and generate income.
I currently outsource jobs in India where the average salary for a fresher phone executive or data entry rep is 160 -250 USD a month. The cost charged to the client is 10x the amount.
There seems to be quite a few TG's being sponsored judging by the length and coversations on this thread - seems like many have lots of time on thier hands - not surprised many end up back at the bars. Someone has to of suggested this before - any success?
