Arcadius Having re read my post sorry that I was so blunt, I should have just said that I did not agree with that statement - Caw Tort Crap But I am not sure I understand "Naturally you would think so" And as for "joie de vivre" I might well agree if I knew what the f_ck it meant (555) To be honest there is little that endears me to Thaiís in general Cheers JJ

JJ To be honest there is little that endears me to Thaiís in general Indeed not - but I think you're just making explicit here what has been apparent for some time. Hence, "naturally, you would think so" [me talking complete crap], as our responses to the Thais are diametrically opposed. The Thais have no God-given right to be liked by everyone. Seems to me only natural that a culture so different from our own must elicit very different responses from farang. I think there are lot of expats in LOS who don't like the Thais very much (or at all). In the interests of balance, it seems only reasonable that this viewpoint should be properly expressed on this forum - and there's little point in those of us who are potty about them pretending to be even-handed. Joie de vivre? Literally 'joy in living'. I suppose 'love of life' would be the most natural English equivalent. Ý

TPE The one thing IMHO Thais are not, is individualistic Yeah, 'individualistic' was the wrong word. It implies a western-style cult of individualism, or a pride in being different, and I don't think either exist in LOS. You're right that Thais are strongly influenced by their peer groups, and there is of course a heavy emphasis on consensus and non-confrontation. But within those cultural constraints, it seems to me that Thais are permitted a large amount of personal space to do their own thing, and many take full advantage of this without making a big fuss about it as Westerners are inclined to do. I can give 2 examples from BGs I know quite well (or at least have known for an extended period): Case 1 is an unusually truthful person by any standard. I have never once caught her out in a lie - and I've set her plenty of little traps since I started to get curious about this. If she doesn't want to answer truthfully, she usually tries to evade the question. When cornered, she'll flat-out refuse to answer rather than make something up. Where the hell did this come from? Thai culture places little enough value on veracity, and the last place you'd expect to find it is in the bars. She doesn't seem to think this trait is especially praiseworthy, or even to be particularly aware of it. Even so, I'd say it marks her out as a very distinct Thai individual. Certainly a very distinct Thai BG. Case 2 is a Roman Catholic (100% Thai) from Hicksburi in darkest Isaan. I discovered this one night when she was leafing through an old art book, and started banging on (very knowledgeably) about the Saints and their various attributes. Turns out that she was sent to a Catholic boarding school for a couple of years after being losing her mother at 13. The family is not Catholic, nor her village, nor (I presume) her bar. Nevertheless, she's kept it up - she's now 24 - and is still quite dutiful (tries to go to Mass once a month). This is something important to her privately (big fan of Mary Magdalene), and is clearly not conditioned by her social environment. Again, I'd say it marks her out as a quite distinct Thai individual. BGs are certainly not all the same. Of course it's true (as with any large group of people) that most fall within easily identifiable types, but I'm surprised at how often I still come across BGs who are nothing like any other BG I've previously encountered. At any event, the fact that they go with men for money is often one of the least interesting things about them.

spot on re the "lie' thing - again, it seems a normal thai trait, not to straight out lie, just alter the facts a little, e.g. one TG told me she always tells her farang sponser "I love you" - then under her breath says, "like my father" - and of course the old look at the floor trick if the question is too difficult, and wait until an easier question is asked !

Arcadius Once again I have to take a slight issue with you on this Not many maybe between 3 and 7 posts have been negative about Thai's in general I normally keep these thought to myself and when I post what appears to be Negative about the BG of LOS it is not about them but the attitude of Other Bros that seem to have them on some sort of pedestal and refuse to recognise the true nature of themselves or the "relationship" I was careful to say ěThaiís in Generalî as like most people here I have met some genuine stars here and I do not mean in the night time trade but ordinary Thai trying to make a living and support the families ń but the general attitude to life, other people and farang sucks (In General) Anyway thanks for the translation JJ

JJ Other Bros that seem to have them [BGs] on some sort of pedestal and refuse to recognise the true nature of themselves or the "relationship" I think I know what you're saying, though on the evidence of this forum (not to mention real life), it seems to me that 'other bros' come in all shapes and sizes, and it would be hazardous in the extreme to generalise about their 'true nature'. As for putting the BGs on a pedestal... well, responses vary. I certainly know quite a few guys who regard them as contemptible, and really cannot understand this attitude as on the whole I have found them to be notably charming and considerate. As a group, I like them immensely - but no doubt this has much to do with the fact that I select BGs (or allow BGs to select me) who are simpatico. This is not an exact science, and there are certainly exceptions. This very night (not in BKK), I've forked out B1,500 to get rid of an unmitigated nightmare and will be sleeping alone. The true nature of the relationship? Well, what is that? OK, the basic trade is sex for money, but if you think that's all there is to it, then we must flatly disagree. ÝI think the reality is often far more ambiguous, and that it is certainly possible to build rewarding relationships with these women. Whether it is sensible to try to pour those relationships into the conventional moulds of 'wife' or 'girlfriend' is an entirely different matter, and on the whole I think not. Ý At any event, I believe in taking as I find. If I find a woman consistently delightful, why should I give a tuppenny damn if she works as a prostitute? God knows, I've encountered enough complete bitches (the odd TG included) who work in more respectable professions and count as 'good' girls. Ý

Indeed! Arcadius is well spoken and reasonable. Not too many like him on most message boards. I think we could all stand to gain from his example.
