Interesting discussion...i just read in the New York Times today that European and Japanese tourist are flooding the US to take advantge of the drop in the US dollar.... I can hardly wait to see the impact when Bush makes the tax cuts permanent, and if his social security plan goes through with the additional borrowing that it will require.....And this has to happen at same time I place an order with my Thai tailor....no wonder the prices seemed so high !!!!

The currency of a country may be down at a particular time, allowing the average citizen of that nation to buy less when overseas. But that same weak currency will probably cause an upsurge of tourists to his country to take advantage of the situation. This increase in tourists (and spending) may put more money into the pocket of that same average citizen, which in turn allows him to now travel and spend in a way that he might not have otherwise been able to. Western economics tend to be amazingly cyclical. Whether your current currency situation is causing you to either gloat or pout, hang tight, you're bound to be doing the opposite in the not too distant future.

I think American dollar will further decline because the whole economy is based on borrowing, soaring deficit, cooking numbers, questionable accounting practices of US Corporations. It has lost 25% of its value against Euro over the last 3/4 years period. But a sharp decline of US dollars will rattle the World financial markets and many central banks of many countries will have to intervene by devaluing their own currencies. How about 30 Bht/US dollar?

How about 30 Bht/US dollar?" I agree. Bush wants an additional $80 billion for Iraq, yet 40,000,000 people don't have health insurance. The rising debt and bad economy will further damage the exchange rate. Most Americans also earn less now compared to a few years ago. With bad relations with most of the world, more threats of terrorism, and the fact you have to get a visa to visit the US, I doubt tourists will turn the economy around in the near future. This same administration said they don't think the bad exchange rate is important. The sad reality is Asia is one of the few places where the US Dollar has any value. I'd like to visit Europe, but just can't afford it.

Central banks can intervene in currency markets to try to devalue their currencies by buying US treasuries but it doesn't work - this has been highlighted most recently by Japan at the start of last year. The dollar rises and then soon falls away again, the currency markets with 1.9 trillion odd traded a day are far to big to be controlled or manipulated by central banks. The dolllars weakness at the moment is caused by the deficits. The strength of the Euro is not based on the economic strength of the Euro area but on dollar weakness and the fact that the Euro is gaining status as a reserve currency. Now, the main thing is the chinese Yuan this is currently pegged to the dollar at 8.23, if the chinese move to freely float the currency it is very likely we will see currency appreciation across the asian currencies including the Thai baht - against the US dollar, but also the euro, pound etc. So if and when this happens it will make LOS more expensive for everyone coming here from faranglands. So make the most of it.

The double deficit ( trade and budget ) is the root cause for the weak dollars. The dollar will not bounce back in the near future. Better shift some of your US based assets to foreign currency based asset. Hey, I got an idea : Let's buy all the gogo bars in Pattaya and soi Cowboy !! We can then call them Disneyland-Pattaya and Disneyland-Bkk.
