Ive helped a few buddies open accounts with SCB, never any problem, office just down Sukhumvit soi11 is OK, they also agents for moneygram, which is handy - sometimes they do query your Thai status, but just say you want a savings account only, and you will be making a LARGE transfer from overseas soon, and they will not hesitate to sign you up and get you an ATM card.

I have managed to open a joint account in Cambodia with a lady that I know there, and my bank has indicated that I can transfer a set amount each month to the bank without a charge for doing so.  Does anyone know weather that is possible or practical in Thailand?

For what it's worth, my wife and l have a joint account opened at a Bangkok Bank branch in her home town outside of Bangkok. Whenever we go there we are treated like we have a billion baht in our account. Served immediately by someone high up who speaks good English.
Never had any problems transferring money from overseas.
In Bangkok we are just another number, but l have noticed that there always sems to be someone in the branch who speaks good English if needed.

My two cents on Bangkok Bank is this:

1. ŬSeveral years ago, I transferred 1,200 US to my wife at BKK Bank. ŬThey never credited it and, upon my return to BKK four months later, she and I went to the Bank on Silom Road and forced them to look up the transfer. ŬAfter several hours, they found the transfer. ŬIt had her correct married name and the correct branch but did have ONE DIGIT wrong in the account number. ŬThey made no effort to locate her or contact her nor did they return it to the remitting bank as being incorrect. ŬThey merely held it, probably hoping to make it a dormant deposit at some time and confiscate the funds. ŬImagine how many times that has happened in the past and how much money they make this way.

2. ŬToday, I deposited some funds to BKK Bank in a Pattaya branch and WAS CHARGED 30 f_ckING BAHT AS A HANDLING FEE. ŬNow picture this, I deposited the cash to one of their account holders account but because the account holder had an account in the BKK area and I was depositing it in Pattaya, THEY CHARGED ME FOR THEIR f_ckING TIME.

Anybody else want to know why I will never deal with Bangkok Bank???

*just in fun*

Imagine how many times someone has wired transfer funds to a WRONG account number?    We've been doing 10-20 transfers a day since Bangkok Bank opened, and it hasn't happened once.   One way to make sure you write down the correct # is to say it OUT LOUD digit by digit as you write it down on the deposit or transfer slip.   The locals think it's really cute when foreigners do this.

Perhaps a cheaper way to transfer your fund to and from Pattaya (so save your 30 Baht) would be to drive it there yourself.

useful thread this as will be opening account next time in BKK (prepration for retirment in 20 years - hows that for commitment to LOS!!!)

Had only considered Bangkok Bank up to now - have used in London and they have been very helpful to me and also by email to BKK itself with questions answered with 48 hours - seems good to me

Would now also consider Siam Bank  - useful back up if anything goes wrong!!

Boner:

I vented my spleen about BKK Bank.  If you happen to live in the Pattaya area, I have found Krung Thai Bank on Central Road to be most helpful.  I have had no problems dealing with these folks.

Don't know about Krung Thai Bank elsewhere.

Boner,

Let me get this straight: you're going to open an account in BKK, as a place to keep your money for the next 20 years?

Are you nuts?

I don't know where you live, but surely you can pick a couple of mutual funds and match the stock market growth over 20 years...and who knows what the baht will do in that time. Ŭ(You DO realize that your funds will be held in Thai baht, don't you?) ŬEven a small recovery in Thailand's economy could give you negative growth vs. US dollars.

Parking your hard-earned and elusive spondulix in a Thai bank for any longer than is necessary seems like a BAD idea to me. ŬIf you just want to be able to say you have a Thai account, open one with enough for your vacation needs, and replenish it each time you come over, but find a better investment for your nest-egg...

haam sup
