I have a guy I meet over the net comes to Pattaya. Was there during the Vietnam war and has not been back since. I meet him in Pattaya the first day he is in country. I take him to the Alamo Bar, soi 8 where I know all the expats. Within 5 minutes I have him hooked up with a studio in a new apartment house for 6k plus electric and phone. Less then 2 minute walk from the beach and 5 minutes from the Big C shopping plaza. In the middle of everthing. Another guy knows about health insurance another how to get a driver licence etc, etc.
Hooking up with the RIGHT expats can smooth your entry into Thailand. Many guys are ok.
In 38 days I plan on becomming a expat in LOS........

To paint all expats with the same brush is as bad as saying all Canucks are hockey fans.
I live in Pattaya where there is a very active permanent cadre of expats. ÝMy good friends there number retired lawyers, investment bankers, defense contractors, steel workers, oil patch workers, managing directors, U. S. Marine/Navy/Air Force/Army personnel, spooks and those, like me, that have spent the greater part of our adult lives working on various contracts overseas.
If you hang around the bars during your 3 week vacation, the expat you could be exposed to are those that are just hanging on and trying to last another month before trying to get home on borrowed money. ÝYou don't see those of us that have homes, children in school, businesses, etc. Ý
I also know the owner of the Alamo Bar and BigD is 100% correct in what he says. ÝGary will help you and can smooth some problems out if you just ask.
We are not all trailer park trash and I, for one, resent being blanketed by some of these conclusions by those of you that don't really know.
By the way, Poontang is spelled with two "o's".

No problem. Very easy to be a f_cking elitist in LOS. If you can't find expats here you consider lower life forms, it's very unlikely you're fit to live yourself. And if they don't do it for you, some of the tourists in Pattaya or hauling themselves along Suk are bound to oblige.
Snotty friends are no problem either, some of them well up to Frazier Crane impressions. In general, I'd say there are a lot fewer 'average' folks in LOS (I'm talking about expats) than back home, more who cluster at the extremes. Bit like the whole set-up really - life in technicolor rather than shades of grey. Lots of good stuff & bad stuff, less mediocrity.
Hell - if you can afford them, you even get to screw snotty BGs. Prefer 'em cheaper & unsnotty myself, but then I'm a peasant at heart.
I can confirm that the ice hockey problem is well under control in Thailand. Ý Ý Ý

The reason I would like LOS is because I would probably get to meet some people like you, or Haam Sup or Asian Man, or many others on this forum.
I like the nonchalant attitude most of you have, the "f_ck the PC crap of the western world".
Also, many of the expats (who aren't getting drunk all the time and are holding on by there last baht) remind me of the people I met in Kuwait etc. ÝFor some reason, it just excites me to see these people leave the comfort zone of there respective countries and live in a new culture experiencing all the +ves and -ves of the alien society. Ý
I guess you misconstrued what I meant in my previous post... or was it by design? Hmm.... I wonder.
