The more I go to Thailand, the less I tip. Ý
10b is a normal tip and 20b for something special. Ý Giving more just takes away from the reason for a tip - that is an acknowledgement that this person is to you better at their job than others you have encountered. Ý
I never view tips as a wage supplement. Ý
Giving everyone a tip all the time just makes the whole exercise pointless.

Tipping everyone's has a different view here:
Taxi drivers...I use my internal point system:
Ý Ý> points for knowing where he is going. (Half of them do not.
Ý Ý> points for showing me a new short-cut
Ý Ý> Big points for shutting the hell up and not complaining about heavy traffic.
Based upon above criteria -5 badht to +100
Bellman: These people I would like to avoid at all costs, but they are like the baggage police. It is not that they do a bad job, but I really need the help when I got off the plane and not during the last 100 feet of my journey.
Usually 20 badht per bag, so I do not look like a putz.
Valet's at the MP when you park they park your car. I tip these guys 100 badht in advance so they don't f_ck up my car.
Waitresses always 20 badt even if 10% is already added. (learned this from the Thai's)
Chambermaid, I really never made it my practice to tip these people. Then again, I never made a pig of the room or have any special requests. If the room was nasty from a party the night before, I usually pre-clean it.
Servers at bars, usually loose change 20 badt.
BG never over the agreed amount. I don't haggle over the fee initially therefore taxi money is not added either.
MP anywhere from 500 to 2000 badt. I guess I am the bigger tipper in this area, but small potatoes next to some Thais providing Prada shoes etc... Besides I live here and usually return to the same girl a couple of times so the high tip is just an future investment, that pays bigger dividends than the Thai banks.
That's my 2 badht's worth

...actually I do have one guy I tip every time....20 baht to the bus driver on long trips....I call it "survival tax"...
As others have said its an individual choice and it really is "up to you".

I tip drivers , if they 1) Do not tell stories about "special shops" 2) safe and swift drive.
Filling the points 1&2 earns them 10-20 extra.

I live in New York and everyone expects tips tips and more tips. I have been to many asian countries and here are some of my experiences.
Taxi drivers do expect a tip unless it's a short ride. Just round of to the nearest 20 baht is good. I would tip more if I ask the taxi driver to drive into traffic because of lost time going there and back, like ratchada. A lot of time my TG would pay for taxi ride because I don't have small bills. The same girl would tip differently each time and usually depending on how much change they have.
Some of the taxi driver do say that lots of customers don't tip and make them wait. I just go with the norm.
The last time I ate at the ratchada seafood, the female manager did come up to me and thank me for giving the waitress a good tip, 100 baht. Said that the waitress is really happy. The manager offered to drive me back to the hotel in her own car but I decline. Could tell her I was heading to the MPs!
Maids get a lot from me, 100 baht, because they are underpaid. I tip everyday because I don't know if different maids each day.
Ok...I admit I over tip but I'm from New York and can't help it. I would feel guilty if I tip less then 1000 baht at a MP. 20% at resturants. 100 baht at gogo bars. I don't even talk price with TG because I give them more then they ask anyways...4000 baht LT at gogo bars. I don't know what I'm thinking but to me it's still a bargain because the same girl over here would cost $500 per hour and sex might or might not be included.
I didn't think I ruin the price because the TG think of me as the exception or that they treated me extra nice but I tip them all the same.

In using this logic, let me pose a question ... if the ride from LaGuardia Airport to Manhattan is roughly the same distance/time as the ride from Don Muang to BKK, the meter in NY reads US$35, the meter in BKK reads 200B (about $4.50), what should you pay in BKK? ÝShould you double it (and give him 400B) and give him a 100% tip, as you are doing with every BG (assuming an average LT price of 2000B)?

Personally, I don't have any rules for tipping. I like this idea: "Random acts of kindness".
Sometimes, it could be 20 B and sometimes, it could be 1,000 B. I remembered buying the Bamboo bar girls several rounds of drinks and leaving 2,000 B as tip. Just wanted to blow 10,000 B that night. I have never done that since.

good question & some of those guys really amazes me.
I mean being european & not having any tipping culture whatsoever & just visiting New york & los angeles I did never experience any 'forced' expectation for the 15-20% tipping I was told are expected most places...
as a first for me I tried to tip perhaps 10% at most places & still felt I was overpaying big time!
so in LOS I do tip here & there, but no where near tglover2's ballpark

tipping should be "up to you"' its good to have maybe a heart where beggars are concerned, but i now find really its more limited with me to mothers with children (thats charity) tipping a girl sure always if good 200-1000 baht....hotel staff 20 baht standard.....resturants maybe not, unless it is say 20 -50 baht.....i usually tip taxi drivers , bar staff 50 baht on leaving....a week though of tipping and you are only maybe 1000 or two out of pocket , but cotributed to the persons that make your stay nice in a small or larger way.

And all this time Iíve felt guilty for over tipping. ÝWow, tglover2, youíve got me beat. Ý1000bht tip is the most Iíve ever tipped p4p and I felt almost stupid for doing it. ÝBeing from the US and having worked in the service industry, I usually over tip (or so I thought). ÝHowever, I was forewarned about Thailand and did the (what seems to be) norm: round up at the bar, restaurant, and cab (unless exceptional service), the maids always get at least 20bht, and give the p4p girls the most (soft heart/good service).
Tipping in the US is expected, if the service is good or great. ÝI was in the business over a decade and I have no problem leaving only 10% for adequate service and stiffing the bastards for poor/shoddy/rude service. ÝFor rude service, I like to see a manager to get my point across, too. ÝAnd for you Euros visiting the US, donít worry, when we hear the accent, we expect less. ÝIím not being flippant. ÝItís just standard. ÝAny waitron worth their salt will understand and not hold a grudge. ÝIf they do, then curse them in your native tongue. ÝIt drives them nuts.
If I really like the BG Iím with, I like it when she suggests tips. ÝA big help. ÝBK, I also like the random acts of kindness idea. ÝAnd DG, for Karmaís sake, I always tip the beggars. ÝNo wonder I never have change.
