A had one of my friends visiting me today and we talked about LOS and especially his sponsorship, I did a quick search on the forum and here I am in this topic to do a post.
Some of you might know that one of my friends at work is gay and is into TBs. To cut a long story short, he fell in love with a TB who worked in a go go bar in Patong during his last trip to Phuket in November last year. In addition to his feelings of love, he has a good heart and a good portion of naivit» that has put himself into trouble. The TB in question invited him to his family's village in Isaan and the poor conditions there had the wished effect on my friend.
I have no idea of how much money in he has given to this TBF and the family. But I imagine that it must have been a lot as he has opened a bank account for them. In addition he bought him a handphone to be able to talk to him on the phone, and bought him a motorbike for Baht 30000. The motorbike was intended as a transport method from the village to the the city to enable his TBF to visit a language school. My friend agreed to send a monthly sponsorship of Baht 28000 which equals to about one fifth of his salary here before taxes.
Meanwhile things have developed into the bad, or should we more experienced bros say expected direction. His TBF decided not to visit the language school in Isaan and instead moved to his sister in BKK. The sister, aswell as the family back in the village has no phone. The only reliable source of contact between my friend and the TB would actually have been the handphone. About two or three times a month he gets a reply to his emails saying thank you for the money or please send me more money.
Today my friend was close to collapse as he is very worried to what happened to his TBF and asked me again for his advice. He said to me that always when he is phoning there is always a female voice saying something in Thai that he does not understand. I called the number and figured out that the handphone is switched off. I asked him if it was like this all the time and he said that he has not been able to speak to his TBF ever since he left LOS.
Again as so many times I gave the same advises to my friend about staying cool or otherwise cut the sponsorship and do something else with the money. He is having no control at all if his TBF really quit the business. But he feels that he is into deep already and wants to find out the truth personally without announcing his visit. He does not realise that he has been lured into something big and considering his life experience and common sense, I can unfortunately not help him much anymore.
My friend told me that he is sponsoring his TBF so he quit his work in Patong and gets a decent life without being forced to work in the sex industry. Sooner or later he wants to bring him to our country and give him a future. Another one of this classic tales from LOS and this is why such a sponsorhip, especially under the said conditions has never crossed my mind!

as you may know from my comments in other threads, I'm sponsoring my TGF now (for better or worse). But I have a pretty cut and dried approach to this: when it works, great, if it stops working, the sponsorship stops. This is no different than the financial relationship that I would have with someone that lived with me and then moved out.
Your friend's situation has never worked (from what I read in your post) so he should only do one thing: stop sending money immediately. An occasional e-mail from his "TB" does not a relationship make. But I bet he won't follow your advice on that, eh? Funny how people let different financial rules apply in LOS -- they would never act the same with someone in their own culture. I think a lot of it is the "knight on white horse" (to quote a post from MrJoe) syndrome.

Thanks a lot for your post, bro! I have the same feeling about the situation of my friend. Yep, he will not listen to me, even when asked him to use common sense. But I guess I will send him one of these emails tonight starting with "You know I was thinking a lot of what we talked about last evening and I would again ask you to consider that ...".
As for humble me: If things turn out well, I might very well discuss some kind of reasonable sponsorship with my new tilac during my next trip to bridge the two months before she comes to my country for a test ride. Her family has a phone at the house in the village, 555...!

I dont wish to hurt anybodies feelings here.
I dont understand the concept of 'sponsoring' a girl. As for the amounts you have been sending then I find it mind boggling.
I skimmed through this thread and the least amount I saw given as a sponsorship was 20 000 bht per month.
My GF payed her way through Uni and landed herself an office job. After 5 years working for the same company and paying for night classes to improve her English she has managed to get upto 12 000 bht per month.
This is her reward for working 6 days a week 8am- 5pm.
And know some of your girlfriends think that they can 'manage' on 20 000 bht whilst sitting on their arse all day.
There are a number of English teachers who are living on less who have grown up with western comforts taken for granted.
Sorry guys I appreciate it's non of my business what you do with this money, but have you all thought this through?
