Mr. Dave, No doubt that your lawyer is probably very efficient for many other matters, but a 3,000 baht fee just for opening a bank account is a waste of money, as already written in another thread: http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=30&topic=151&start=2 By the way, does he give you a commission for any new customer he gets with your help?

-- French Goat - Some would think"waste of money". I say it was excellent value for the money. No problems, no frustration, no aggravation. That's worth something to me - and to some others. Some might suspect a commission for referrals. None. (Perhaps he'll buy lunch someday.) I'm recommending a valuable service for those expats who want this level of service.

Mr. Dave, I agree with you for the other services that you described in your other (valuable) post in the thread mentioned above, but I still think that paying 3,000 baht just for opening a bank account is a waste of money. It is so easy, really! I opened my own bank account in Thailand with only my passport, as a "tourist" (at that time), no work permit, no thai wife (not yet, at that time)... and no problem, djing djing!!!

French Goat - here's the question: When you opened your bank account, did you also get a VISA card, and online banking rights? Opening a bank account is easy - it's getting the necessary frills in addition that's the key. In the end, value is always perceived - if he feels that he got his money's worth, then that's a good value. Now that the information is out there, if others feel he same way, they know where to turn for the information. I managed to do it only my own, but it wasn't straight-forward, but I considered it a learning experience. Same same, but different! Harry

Well, there are people paying US$200 and up to get an US account. THB 3,000 is a small investment.

Drlove Think you're out of touch with reality. U.S. banks contrary to your beliefs are much rather giving incentives to get customera rather than taking from them! Ain't no way I would ever pay a bank $75. What do you think the Thai's pay ?

Out of touch with reality? As a non-resident (that's what we discuss here, isn't it) it's kind of hard to get an US account. American banks require a US address plus a SS number. If you want a US account as a non-resident you have to deal with companies like http://www.valisinternational.com If not, please open one for me, oh you wise one. Please, don't come so hard on me without knowing the facts, Mr. Brautwurst!

I understand your point, Harry. I just don't know if Mr. Dave obtained a VISA card and online banking rights as he only mentioned that the amount he paid was for opening a bank account (and getting an ATM card), and IMHO, if it was only for this operation, it was a waste of money. But his contribution was very valuable in the other thread and I guess that many members will be interested and will contact him.

Dr. Love: It's actually quite easy to open a bank account with a U.S. bank even for those who are not a U.S. resident/citizen and do not have a U.S. social security number. For a non-resident, you need your passport, an address (not necessarily U.S. address), good funds (cash or wired funds) and a completed IRS form W-8BEN. Of course you need to be at the bank in person, unless someone at the bank knows you and is willing to open an account for you without you being at the bank. In Thailand, I think the biggest problem could be the banks (or branches) themselves do not really know what is required by law for a non-Thai to open an account.
