I think you have raised the most relevant point Mr Alan, that being the ability for a governments central bank to consistantly manipulate it's currency on the markets. In my analogy of a military coup in any western country causing a complete colapse of that countries currency I was not taking into account the fact that the Thai baht is 'a thinly traded currency'. Pesumably they have been able to afford to prop up the currency to a certain extent without completely breaking the bank.
I do remember when the number of baht to the pound / dollar was little more than half what it is now. I think if that situation ever came around again the Thai ecomony would be decimated, particularly tourism. Lets hope that never happens and we dont have to find out.

just not thinly traded but hard to find a house that will trade it for a retail account..... part of their problem is that the market isn't a freely traded one, a market where anyone can bet one way or the other... part of the 1997 fear, other people can control their currency......
