Quote: from harold444 on 8:02 pm on Jan. 31, 2011 stop w the misinformation pal. you can bring in $63000 in cash- just need to declare it.
I've never been stopped by Thai customs or seen anyone else get stopped. You just walk through the Green channel and try not to wake them up as you pass (if there is anyone there). Thai customs is a joke. You wouldn't declare the extra 400 cigs, or the extra bottle of Scotch, so why declare the extra $63K. There'll be no one there to declare it to anyway. Gym - if you want to bring the cash in properly then carry out an interbank transfer and don't be a clown.

For those who like technical stuff. (So that's probably not many here). Countries have limits on the amount of cash that can be taken in or out without declaring it. I found the following info on the net: (A) UK - entering or leaving from a country not in the EU, you need to declare cash in excess of 10K Euros. Declaring your cash does not stop the authorities from seizing it. If they think it is to be used for illegal activities, or is the product of illegal activities they can seize it. Its then up to you to follow due process to prove that it was wrongly seized. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Foreigntravel/BringinggoodsorcashintotheUK/DG_173289 (B) USA - entering or leaving. You need to declare cash in excess of US$10K. Again, it can be seized. The form that you have to fill in to declare these amounts to the authorities is made under some money laundering regulations and so no doubt if you can't answer any questions from customs about the legitimacy of the cash they would also seize the cash until you could prove its legitimacy. https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/195/kw/cash%20limits/session/L3NpZC9MKjJFRnZsaw%3D%3D https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/447/kw/seizing%20cash http://www.fincen.gov/forms/files/fin105_cmir.pdf http://www.fincen.gov/statutes_regs/frn/pdf/ANPRM.pdf (C) Australia - entering or leaving the country you need to declare amounts in excess of A$10K. Again fail to declare it or not satisfy the customs officer that it is legit money and it can be seized. http://www.customs.gov.au/site/content11170.asp (D) Thailand - entering & leaving. TIT so nothing is simple. Here's the link you figure it out. My reading is: Entering - if you are carrying belongings & cash that have value of at least THB10K (yes, just THB10K) then you should be going through the Red Channel. Also specific requirement to declare cash in excess of US$20K. Leaving - Declare amounts in excess of THB50K and US$20K. http://www.customs.go.th/Customs-Eng/Traveller/TravelEng.jsp?menuNme=Travel

Over the years I have read of people getting caught at the airport for not declaring excess cash. The excess cash was confiscated by those nice Custom's people. I would not recommend you carry cash over here in that amount. Open a bank account and transfer it. You will get as good a rate via transfer as you will get on the ground with cash. If you don't have a local bank account, bring $10,000 cash and open an account upon your arrival. Leave instructions with somebody you trust (your banker perhaps) to transfer the remainder of money to you after you provide them the banking details of your newly opened account. Don't take a chance on losing any of it.
