Nokna; You're pretty much right and, the big reason behind that is coz we the people remind our gov. that they work for us!!! There are many cases that one has to look at it from a "what's good for many" point of view though. I always try to keep in mind the old saying You cant please all the people all the time. When I think somethings right or wrong, as you can see by some postings of mine, I will stand up and fight. So keep up the good work bro. I'm with you as much as I can be...

'but... it's not like the UK's doesn't have a say in these law making procedures in Brussels. It's not like Germany and France get round the table and say "ok lets piss the UK off today and impose such and such a law on them". ' quote from X. British Beef. the EU has decreed it is safe, but the French(call me a racist, but i have no time for them),are still refusing to have anything to do with it. even when they are told to sell it and then fined when they refuse, what do they do? refuse to pay the fine. then negiotate a way out of it and suddenly all fines are dropped, but beef still not on sale. Fishing Rights. British fishermen are told to limit their quota in the waters around our island(but again,we might be able to call ourselves an island in the future). but the Spanish and Portugese fisherman are allowed to sail all the way north to the same waters and their quotas are much higher. why?,because they have overfished their own areas. just 2 examples off the top of my head where i,as a tax payer and a voter have been 'pissed on'. when the EU Commission says jump,Blair jumps and tugs his forelock.but other countries sometimes stand firm and they finally win. and yes,i know it will be a case 'of not if,but when'. but we were promised a referendum, but it keeps being put on the back boiler, why? because the government KNOW they will lose. sorry for the rant in my last few posts, but i do feel strongly about this.

Quote: from nokna on 2:20 am on Jan. 27, 2003 and no,we did not change to metric years ago.
I think you are right regarding measurements, I meant to say decimal, and I had your old money system in mind. Now 1 pound is 1oop. Before, if I am not wrong, it was some strange shillings and pence thing that I believe didn't add up to 100. The point I was trying to make, was about the liking taken by some people to be "different" and not change based on pure principle -for the heck of it- no matter what overwhelming logical reason may exist (and I had mostly the USA in mind -where in another different example about practical matters, people resist the idea of moving to use $1 coins, but can not do without using their pennies). What is out there easier than a decimal (metric) system. Hey guys! you have it for money ($1 = 100 cents), why not do the same for other things? No, lets do it the difficult way. 1 yard is 3 feet and 1 foot is 12 inches. As a result of having things done in a more complicated ways, you get screw ups like NASA's had when they didn't calculated right the landing for a space craft because of units errors and they crashed it on landing. Puff!went the mission and all those millions of dollars. It easy to think that things are not made more difficult by a system where 1 unit is divided into 3 others (yard and feet), but start moving along the units chain and get into the field of thermodinamics, and you will see what a nightmare things becomes -the equations even are different for different unit systems. By the way, could someone tell me what a stone -the weight unit- is?

The examples Nokna quotes...road signs etc still retain Imperial measurements. The weights and measures remained in imperial.....and although I personally understand kg over lbs...I could never relate to a bloke who is 1m 89cm......The ridiculous petty beaurocracy that goes with prosecuting Bill from Newcastle about how he labels his apples is in my mind offensive to the Nation as a whole Any construction work in the UK has been metric for many years (certainly over 25).....all engineering calculations are so much easier....in the UK a/c for example would be in kW....not Btu (British thermal units) as it is for example in Thailand. Any construction drawings would be in metric...which is far easier using modern software. I tend to think of it that the Brits tend to weigh it up.....choose the good things available.....and ignore the rest....the perfect way to approach a problem

Smegma, I think this is correct... 1 stone = 14 pounds (2.2 pounds = 1 kilo) do the math yourself if you want to know how many kilos are in a stone I think all these different weights and measures are sooooo annoyingly difficult.

Nokna, I'm not going to get into all the individual things you cite about the EU. Whether or not the British government allows itsself to be 'pissed on' or not be the EU was not the point I was making. The only point I was making was in reference to your earlier point about "how would Americans feel if the USA was governed from Bogata".... that wasn't a fair comparison. The USA doesn't have an economic & social pact with Columbia, the UK does with the member states of the EU.

X: The USA doesn't have an economic & social pact with Columbia Of course it has, any spare money they have, after giving all their tax-dollars to the big corporations that control the elections, they send to columbia In return the columbians send them some white powder to stuff up their noses

By the way, in English it is BOGOTA and COLOMBIA for the city and the country (not Bogata and Columbia).

X. i understand what you are saying about 'economic and social pacts'. i agree the USA is not in the same situation as the UK. but for the last 30 years, successive UK governments have sold the public down the river, we vote them in and if they decide on something which the masses disagree on,they ride roughshod over us. the people who voted them in are deemed not important. for hundreds of years, countries within Europe have formed pacts which satisfied themselves at the time, pacts to rise up against countries they did'nt like. our countries are close,i like your countrymen and vice versa, historically we are allies, after all the UK invited William Of Orange to become King of England in turbulent times. i might come across as a little jingoistic(and i am one of the first to acuse others of this),but for centuries, the UK stood alone,we ruled ourselves,we did'nt need anyone else. why do we now need to let other countries suggest what we do in the future. maybe not a majority, but if people in the UK were asked IF we wanted to be part of the EU,you would find a large percentage saying NO. many people would not want 'economic and social pacts' with many European countries. but what i'm trying to say is thet the 'general public','the man in the street','ME' do not have any say in the matter. but i think i must get off this subject,it's too emotive for me. end of subject.
