You can exchange TC's at any place that does currency exchange. In a tourist area, there are many such places.
They actually prefer AMX travelers checks, because they don't have to worry about counterfeit currency (AMX will honor their TC's if the bank follows the proper procedure for getting Id, etc, even if they turn out to be stolen).

Diddler, the answer is very simple. Bring traveler checks with you to cover your purchases. You can exchange them at Thai Banks (and branches) at very good exchange rates. If you loose them, you can get a refund, so your vacation will not be ruined. Be sure to carry your passport when you need to cash TC's.
When you arrive at the airport, only exchange enough money for one day until you can get to a bank. $100 should be enough, but maybe a bit more if you will pay for a cab directly to Pattaya. Even with the mediocre exchange rates at the airport, you can't loose very much if you only get a limited amount at the airport (and it will be easier to count).
Bring the ATM card and credit card just in case. Also, be sure to record the TC numbers in case you loose them. AMX TC are the best and at some banks you can get them for free (or else pay a 1% service charge).
Good advice from Mr. Alan. I always take AMX travellers cheques to cover about US1000/week and I have my atm card. I use the ATM to get my initial few TBxxxx from the airport ATM then exchange the TX later in the holiday. Actually the more I travel to LOS I find that I have enough cash with me to cover the taxi fare into town then it's straight into the ATM or TX. I usually stay in the main towns so no problem changing TX or finding an ATM altough sometimes there is a huge queue if Cobra Gold is on!

When I last went to Laos I changed a few thousand Baht on arrival to have some tip money and to wipe my arse if running out of toilet paper.
I did not count my change as they only had 1,000 kips. A 1,000 kip note is worth so little that I just gauged the width of the wad and then gave an inch to my travelling companion and kept an inch for myself.
Remided me of the Nigerian niara.

In Don Muang I have always found that the currency exchange *machines* offer the best rates and accuracy - no people to deal with and never busy.
