I'm amazed how, the moment the currencies fluctuate just a tad bid (in relation to other regional currencies), there's always a section of folks immediately screaming how they are considering other outlying countries as their vacation destinations, because 'Thailand is just too expensive, now'.

It's still a lot less expensive than downtown Santa Monica.

I don't think the currency just started to fluctuate though, but have been for sometime now. At its' current rate, several other countries like Philippines are cheaper.

For comparison to pricing that I'm more familiar with, Thailand: BF + ST = ~600 Baht + 2000 Baht (+ drinks) = ~ $87 USD (+ drinks)
Hong Kong: Sex141.com ST = ~ 600 HKD (incall) -1000 HKD (outcall) HKD = ~ $78 USD - $130 USD

Bangkok 5 star hotel prices are still a little cheaper, while 3-4 star hotel prices have not gone up too much. It's pretty sad when Bangkok P4P pricing is so comparable to HK, which once upon a time was way too expensive.

I'm not THAT old, but I remember the rate being 1 USD = 44 Baht just a few years ago to today's >30 Baht. That is a big difference in just a few years.

Other than Bangkok having specialities like Eden and a few others, I would seriously consider saving a few extra hours of plane rides and stay in HK or a different location all together.

Since Man does not live off love alone, once you're done with p4p, how do the remaining prices compare?

- hotels are still significantly more expensive in HK.
- So is food
- So are the SPA/Sauna places

The quality of service you receive in the above leaves much to be desired - I pay $50 for *very* nice accomodations in BKK. Yes, there's always going to be some idiots bragging about how they *only* paid $150 at the Westin/Landmark/etc... but there will always be people willing to part with their money, once they parted with their common sense. Of course, compared to such ridiculous pricing, HK would appear similar.

Yes, you can find cheap food in HK, but if you want to sit down at a nice place, you'll invariably pay a bit more than in BKK (albeit, of course, you can manage to spend enormous amounts of money in BKK for food as well. I don't).

Tailors cost more in HK.

SPA/Sauna/Massage cost more, albeit, admittedly, they do offer more services in terms of the sauna, steam rooms, pools, etc... The service ends pu being more mechanical, on average, than what I get in BKK.

Of course, you can head to Cambodia, or Laos - though you do end up in proverbial shitholes, but hey, you're saving money.

Vietnam may be a good mix between cheap and moderately nice (from what I hear), though again (from what everyone told me who was there) the attitude leaves much to be desired compared to LOS/BKK.

So, sure, it's more expensive than it was 4 years ago when the Baht traded at 44 to the dollar, and if you're pinching pennies, that matters - in the grand scope of things, I feel you still get a far better value for the money you are spending than the alternatives (at least for the criteria I look for).

can't speak for Cambodia, Laos or Vietnam but the infrastructure, hotels, food, pricing & quality in Angeles City is pretty similar to PTY, but not nearly the variety, after just checking airfares going with LOS again it's $200 more to P.I. from L.A., the savings will help w/the poor xchg rate & get (what I think is) the better attitude w/a Thai girl, just to add there are no more courier deals LAX To MNL w/Jupiter

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 27 July 2007 :-

Baht may hit 32 by year-end, says KBank
===============================

The baht should end the year at 32 to 32.2 to the dollar due to ongoing imbalances in supply and demand, according to Kasikornbank.

Kobsidti Silpachai, head of market and economic research at KBank, said foreign reserves and the exchange rate were closely related.

''Based on our model, for every $1 billion gain in foreign currency reserves and swap positions by the central bank, the baht will appreciate by 0.19 to the dollar,'' he said.

Dr Kobsidti noted that foreign currency reserves over the past year had risen by 24%, against just a 4.7% increase in the money supply. ''At present, foreign currency reserves and swaps stand at $84.6 billion and are expected to reach more than $93 billion by the end of the year. So we see the baht trading at 32 to 32.2 by the end of the year,'' he said.

The baht was quoted yesterday at 33.71/76 to the dollar, slightly weaker than 33.68/73 on Wednesday. The currency eased after suggestions by policymakers that additional measures were being considered to help stem appreciation against the plunging US dollar.

I realise TIT but why would an economist quote "Thai on-shore prices" when assessing currency exchange.
So to put some reality into what he is saying,, the Thai BAHT will trade at 27.6 by years end.
Currently trading at 30.1.

There is a very positive thing here for the poor in Isaan,, soon it will be cheaper to use US$ instead of firewood.

Bloomberg Offshore rate: 32.33

I had expected to get the offshore rate when I used my US ATM card. But last night's 10,000 Baht withdrawal debited my Wells Fargo account by 292.26 USD.

10,000 / 292.26 = 34.2161 which seems to indicate that the ATM withdrawals are made at the onshore rate.

sai tai,, SHHHHHHHHH, dont tell the bloody banks, they'll change it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep atm withdrawals are usually at the onshore rate ( minus a bit extra for the bank). Then they add their fees and charges,,, I'd be really angry about that except I have shares in banks in Aus and earning 20% capital gain and 6% fully franked dividends for each of the last 5 years straight
