Mrs M and I stayed regularly at the Avana Hotel on Bang Na Road Bangkok, near BITEC for years. Mostly Thais, asian tourist groups and few other farangs there.
The bell boys were paid 209 baht a day the last time I asked them about a year ago - plus accom, some meals, English lessons and "who-hoo" tips.
The tips - since Thais and other asians aren't big on this - were minimal. The boys worked in teams of 3,4 or 5 depending on the shift and pooled and shared the tips - 40 baht each a day each was a good day apparently.
Mrs M would leave 20 baht each day for the maid - and the higher level of attention was evident - all toiletries, water and snacks refreshed daily in full ( since Mrs M would "collect" them each day - we still have about a hundred shower caps at home!).
On one occassion Mrs M had to leave a "for you" note in Thai with the 20 baht tip in the bathroom since it was still there when we came back to the room that evening.
This is the same hotel where we left 20 baht on the table after breakfast and the waitress ran after us with the money we had "forgotten" - though some time later Mrs M concluded this may have been a ploy by the girl since money given directly to staff is all theirs whereas money left on the table is generally shared by all staff.
A bad habit with tipping we have noticed of late is check-out girls at the Tesco Lotus at Homepro, also on Bang Na Road short changing customers 20 baht as tip for themselves.
The first time it happened nothing was said, Mrs M just noticed she was 20 baht short and as she approached the check out girl (holding the receipt and the change) the girl just nodded, handed over the missing 20 baht and turned back to serving her latest customer.
Last week, the girl having put our items through asked Mrs M for a 20 baht tip - perhaps it is something they only try with the "mia falangs" but it is there.

... a fine point on tipping protocol here some infrequent visitors might miss, is that tips left on the bill plate, or table, are placed into a tip pool to be shared by wait and kitchen staffs... a tip placed directly in the hand of the wait staff is theirs to keep.
... as Koolbreeze cites, many greedy local restaurant owners (particularly those employing illegal Burmese, Cambodians, Laos) keep the 'house' tip for themselves... consequently, I never leave money on the bill plate in small joints as this.

I follow the wife on some tipping so always tip the bell boys 20 baht and the maid at the end of our visit not every day again 20 baht. Its funny though the first days I go over to her familys house and see her daughters coming out of the shower with the hotel shower cap on.Soap, cotton buds it all get used and she expects it will be replaced every day. I also get world war 3 if I drink water other than the 2 free daily ones provided by the hotel.
Outside on my own if a taxi driver is honest and does not go the long way to where I want to go I round it up as they earn a pittance anyway. I never really tip women as many bros do. Two years ago I went to Nataree and had a nice massage with a lady with the same name of my wife which cracked me up. when I came down and saw my mate we were feeling in a good mood and gave the papasan some cash while we got cards of the place. My girl was by that time back behind the glass now if looks could kill I was dead meat as she saw me give money to the papa san.
I have never been asked for a tip by ladys to be honest apart from the lady drink in the bars.That I try to avoid unless I want the mama san to keep her trap shut about what I get up to in the bar,and occasionally if they are nice about it and im in a party mood. But all that pushy stuff my starfish rader goes off the wall and im outta there. I think it has to do with the way I look at p4p in thailand and thats the same as I do in the west. In and out do what ya gotta do pay the cash she asks end of.
The guys in the playboy hotel on soi 3 are always chasing me for tips though im a regular there if im in town.Every day with a different girl and my brother in law is in another room.All the f***ing time there is a knock at the door ' you friend want beer ', cigerettes,condoms, pay room.Which is a pain in the arse as I go there to f*** for 2 hrs.
Then the smiles and the 'tip for me ' If that is the last f***ing time I get disturbed in the next two hours who cares. They just smell a falang out having fun and want a piece of the action. Its smart to tip these guys as like the towel ladys at the massage they are helpfull and I will come back regularly.

Yes Baskoy I admit that my decision to leave a tip for the maid,and not to tip the bellboy cannot rationally be justified if their poor pay is the only criterion,but it is not.What disqualifies the bellboy is the manipulative behaviour described by Kaymanx.
However,that raises another undesirable feature of tipping.It is offensively patronising, and almost demands that the recipient of the tip adopt an excessively compliant and fawning manner as a condition of being tipped.
At its worst it amounts to saying "I am rich.You are poor.If you want a tip lick my arse".

Last week when we arrived Myself Wife and 12 years Son it was raining at the air port, we got in line for the taxi as normal
the lady said take the van not taxi as it's raining.
How much? 800bht WTF I thought every time you come here someone is trying to scam you in some way shape or form.
I said NO I want meter taxi! she say you have to many bags, what are you talking about ? if you take taxi bags get wet.
Sure she had a point but on principal I have always taken a metered taxi what about 300bht or there abouts and I tell the driver to drive like Michael Shoemucker and I give good tip, so we load the boot up with over hanging bags and off we go, I hadn't changed any money yet so Wifey had to pay
Give him good tip I said,I'm thinking 100bht, later I asked what you tip him Darling? 300bht she says, Shit very generous never mind she replied I make good money in Australia and he was a nice guy from Isaan.
I normally tip 10-20 bht for taxi same same for food at Restaurant, but long ago when I paid for a bit of horizontal comfort it could be anywhere from 200 to 500 depending on the service etc.
I think we tend to tip a little more when we only come over every 18months or so, I find if you speak some thai make some jokes and promise a tip the taxi drivers get you quicker to where you want to go no problem, after all the same 55bht ride in Australia would cost you about $25

Yer arriving at the airport again next month but last trip was a bit like yours. I arrived with the wife and our 11 yr old son so many bags you never saw in your life.
I had booked business class from europe so she had 90 kilo + another 21 kilo hand luggage so around 120 kilo [ luckily one bag they did not weigh in amsterdam ].
So we piled up two of those kar thingys so high I could not see in front. Then we went first to the arrivals and then down to the departure noone would take us because of too much baggage. This went on for an hour up in the lift then down again like a scene from monthy python until I started making a scene [ after 11 hrs in a f***in airoplane then she is haggling for nikkles and dimes.] But she dont want to loose face not in Thailand what would the thai think so after what seemed like hrs she made a deal and everything was pilled in the back, the front seat, on my lap. The ones in the boot were hanging out with a sling and off we trot to lower sukomvit at last me thinking to myself only in thailand anywhere else in the world im sure we would get arrested for driving like this.
On the trip back we flew economy but she had yes you guessed it 120 kilo with her I thought f*** here we go again but the thai lady at the check -in desk just smilled and checked it all in unf***ing believable. I usually just pick up one bag and give it to the family when she packs too much they offered me to pay 22 k baht once I said mao kap, no ploblem family keep we come take next year ok. Why is it always that case that has my electric toothbrush or other stuff in it ?
Anyway I have all of that to look forward to again next month I mostly only bring my debit and credit cards so im packed already. She packed two large suitcases a few weeks ago and will go through the same scenario of unpacking and repacking until we leave. This seems something thai women take in their stride I have seen things as hand luggage the size you would not believe they get away with it but obviously they do.

That sounds brutal, but.... At another level, isn't that what P4P is all about ? I am sure, not many that are "poor" or "not rich" visit LOS for the kind of splurging on sex that LOS has built up its reputation on. The regular P4P tourist is certainly "rich" if by rich we refer to those that have surplus money set aside for P4P, or those who come from regions where incomes are substantially higher and therefore find the cost structure in LOS so attractive.
The regular hedonist is saying, for example, that I am rich enough to pay 1000 baht for an hour of sex, thrice a day, for one week, and I don't care if a 20 baht note is thrown about now and then just to smooth my way through.
When I am here to have a good time it seems silly to ruin the spell for a 20 baht note that is not going to make me poorer but will instead keep up someone else's good humor and ensure that pleasant ride I seek. Up to you.
