I made a charge in Malaysia once, and the Bank immediately cancelled my card when I returned to Bangkok. They issued me a new card, but I would only get it in one week, and it was at the time when the hosting service was going to charge my card. BTF was on the line then. Fortunately, the bank allowed only those charges to go through.

I have a bank account in Thailand and I do not want the authorities of my country to learn of that account. So far I have not directly transferred money. What I did was to cash traveller cheques (American Express). As I had to provide my ID card during the purchase of the traveller cheques I wonder whether it can be traced back to where they have been cashed / credited to in Thailand and whether American Express is obliged to provide this kind of information. Ever heard of this before? Any comments?

If the government goes to the trouble to subpoena AMEX for the information AMEX would be obliged to tell. And yes, AMEX knows where each and every T/C is cashed, just like your bank would know where each of your personal checks are cashed. Something I learned today is that if you are a US Citizen and you have a financial interest in a bank account with over USD10K (in any currency) in it you are required to notify the US Government no matter where it is. So wherever you have you bank accounts, make sure they are not directly in your name and the country has the banking secrecy laws of Switzerland or Singapore...

Thanks China Sailor, that’s what I was looking for. Actually I have heard something similar recently. As I don’t think it’s easy to get a bank account incognito and moreover the authorities over here will most likely not approach the Thai government to make all banks in LOS give information whether Mr. NINGNING has a bank account with Thai Military, Krungthep, Siam Commercial, Kasikorn Bank etc. I am fine with the account in my name. So I do not care too much about the name thing, but I don’t want to leave any obvious links and traces such as direct transfers and the like - let sleeping dogs lie.

NINGNING The problem is not that the goverment comes searching for you 'out of the blue', the problem is ex-wives, former creditors, pissed off girlfriends, and people who just do not like you. My understanding is that the IRS pays some real good rewards for information on tax evasion...

It is exactly the tax collection and tax law enforcement activities that I want to avoid. Actually I don’t have a mature plan. I started the account in Pattaya because it is more convenient to withdraw cash from a local bank’s ATM. Meanwhile I tend to think that it’s not a bad idea to have a bit of a deposit no one (ex girlfriends, but especially IRS etc.) knows about. No need to start with a 100,000 deposit – just to have an expandable option … Are there any ways to get an anonymous account, as is possible e.g. in Austria? Any experience?

Good think I personally don't have any such bank accounts, and that I don't have any holdings that qualify. I'm just a poor kid with no assets - what can I say.

The best way to avoid any collection issues is to kep a low profile, fly under the radar, and not really advertise what your intentions are, or what you do, or have -- like posting publicly on a forum with thousands of lurkers is probably not a good idea. Furthermore, once you mastered discretion, you also need to outwardly live the same way.

Oh, I don't know -- maybe asking an Austrian is a good start.
