Kenneth, I have been coming to Thailand for 2 decades, and though you are right ( you dont need 50,000 up country or even bangkok) the bars are my down fall.
Most of us drift into pussy scence.
Even north I would hit Chiang Rai limited bar scence and spend more than I did on other stuff over a month.
Trouble is though your disiplined approach is fine, its hard in practice.
Look if you want to call a spade a spade....live like Thais
in a rural area. Its easy to do 20,000 a month.
But the quality isnt there.
Theres just so many days in a year you can ride a bike, and hang out in a diversion.
And truth is most teachers jobs see them eating 40 baht meals in the low end eateries, and drooling over the bar girls next to them.
I would go nuts.
though I loved the country I had to escape to Pattaya once a month, or Chiang Mai.
When I get older maybe.
Sure.
2 million and your approach to spending and a woman that loves you not alot of Malls in the nearest big town, would see your money last 10 plus years.
Sure networking etc.
But for me I liked the piss and pussy and odd get away, and my girl liked a few dresses and treats.
One day I will have a better bigger budget.
But til then I advice in general (to most punters 50,000 a month) as a starting comfortable point.

Indeed the problem of getting bored is the main one. Not the problem of surviving on 2Mb. One could perhaps live as a king in some African or Indian place for such a sum. But it is the daily life that is the issue. However, this may be a problem even if you have 2M$ (oz or US), how long can you go to visit the same mall, or see a movie, etc. We all need something to do, not just sex... hence starting a business keeps one busy, or getting a job, even as a teacher, not for the low pay, but for doing something. That is a global issue for any person.
PS re. Raven, I am sure he is a nice guy, just pretends to be snidely, under his shell he is great fun, do not get scared of his posts, who knows, if you meet him you may be his best friend...we are all the same more or less.

You don't need 50k up country to live comfortably, nor Bangkok for that matter as long as you have a missus, ie not paying for beaver.
Despite what I read on this forum, it ain't difficult for a farang to find a job in Thailand. The difficult part is staying away from the bars and making contacts before your money runs out.
Once you have a job and a network in Bangkok, you are pretty set for life, give or take 1 or 2 lean years.

Teaching in a Uni might be a little better but if you have good Java and technical skills and can speak Thai you may be able to teach J2EE as a partner to SUN (you would probably have to develop a portfolio in this before you came to Thailand)...

I have started this thread so let me quickly assure that I did not mention Esaan at all. Someone came up with it, but it wasn't me. DG is right in that north LOS seems to be full of opportunities for a falang to quit western living style. But you have either to bring the money with you or earn it locally. The later will involve working in some way. Apart from plan A and B here is my plan C. Ever heard of the "one child one laptop initiative" of MIT and UN. Well, if Thailand is going to buy (they said so) one million laptops running Red Hat Linux I forsee one million customers of mine. Guess who knows Red Hat Linux in and out

Those machines are intended to be closed versions, nothing to install into them. Where will you get a linux expert in the middle of africa or india? They are like appliances, nothing to service inside. Just turn the handle, make electricity and that is it, assuming you can connect to a network... which is where Thaksin comes into play. Sorry to crash your plans, but no need to service those 1 million machines...
