I have been using AEON ATMs ever since the other ATMs started charging a fee - never been charged any fee by them - it gives me 20 x 1000B notes, the ATM receipt shows 20,000B withdrawal, and the bank statement in Australia shows 20,000B withdrawal: Visa Cash Advance 30Jan Thb20000.00 Aeon Credit Sy/Carre. Unfortunately my AU bank hist me with a few fees.

As for opening a local bank account and transferring money over here and getting no interest, I think I am better to leave the cash in a high? interest account in AU and withdraw it in small bits as I need it.

So bottom line is you are "paying" 150 equalivalent- they just recoup later

Baskboy & DG - I didn't know that about AEON ATMs so thanks for the info, although not a Thai bank ATM as AEON is an international financial group, its good to know there's no charge at their machines.

I found this link on the wibbly wobbly web that tells you more about AEON ATMs in Bangkok. It contains a photo of what their ATM machines look like:

http://hubpages.com/hub/Bangkok-ATM-and-Money-Exchangers

This link shows the locations of all the AEON ATM machines in Thailand:

http://www.aeonthailand.com/lang/en/menu/Service_Location/region/Bangkok#soutput

It looks from the map on AEON's thai website link that they are currently only in 4 provinces around Bangkok. But the site could be wrong or out of date. Maybe some of the new shopping malls in Pattaya will have AEON machines? The AEON website also says they charge 3% for cash advances, but presumably that's just for customers making cash withdrawals using an AEON issued card.

As I understand it there is also a branch of HSBC in BKK and if you have an account with them you will be able to withdraw cash without the THB150 fee. But that's another international outfit.

For me where I live I'm stuck with the THB150 fee.

EDIT IN: Just looked at the AEON link again and realised I was not viewing their website properly. It seems there are loads of these banks about. There's even a branch in my local mall (60 minutes drive away) so next time I'm there I'll check it out. Thanks BBoy & DG for this tip.

Right now, I am only concern about 3% fee for credit card transaction. I dont need yet and try not to withdraw money from ATM.

Chase does not want to waive 3% fee for their cards...even after I told them about Capital One...well that was only exchange info b/t email.......dont know I get different answers if I talk to a live person.

Report from The Nation dated Saturday 11 December 2010 :-

Travellers putting trust in Thai ATMs
======================

Smart travellers to Thailand are less likely to carry large sums of cash from home, opting instead to withdraw money at automated teller machines (ATMs) once they have arrived, according to a consumer survey by Visa.

The survey, conducted by Nielsen, interviewed past and future travellers to Thailand. Among those planning to come here, 39% said they preferred to take small amounts of cash to cover initial expenses and access more cash overseas as required.

Somboon Krobteeranon, Visa country manager for Thailand, said that carrying large amounts of cash was increasingly unnecessary for travellers.

"Apart from the option of using payment cards at a shop or restaurant, ATMs that accept international payment cards are generally well located at airports and major tourist and shopping areas," he said. "Travellers can avoid the risk of carrying large amounts of cash and easily access their holiday funds when they need it."

Although access fees were a concern among respondents, the majority of travellers planning to visit Thailand in the next two years said they preferred accessing cash via overseas ATMs for convenience and safety.

55% said availability of ATMs was the key reason for accessing cash from overseas ATMs while 44%were concerned with personal safety and did not like to carry a lot of cash when travelling abroad. 40% agreed ATMs were a good way to access cash for emergencies.

I don't know if this was posted before, but there are 2 AEON ATM machines at Terminal 21. They are on the Caribbean Floor (1 floor down from the street entrance) in a corner with other banks. I believe they are open from 10am to 10pm, same times as Terminal 21 is open.

No transaction charges. I don't know how good their exchange rates are - haven't checked my bank statements. But, saving the 150bt transaction fee can't be all bad.

For those who need to know, in Ubon Ratchathani there are AEON ATMs in Sunee Towers on the ground floor.

I read somewhere that Citibank ATMs at Asoke do not charge any withdrawal fee. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks BK. Although Oz seems to be implying that you would need an account with that particular bank, my understanding is that anybody can use it.
