My dear Bestmate,

Some of us expats (unlike sex tourists) like to have the comfort of girls at home who tell us where and when we can go out and don't care for hookers or bargirls who hit us up for ladydrinks or Pla Meuk for the 1,000th time.

We do let us go sometimes... and organize mini-orgies at secret places and show off our asses to our friends and indulge in cheap looking activities like grabbing of bar girl tits (preferably after a RT).

Plus if you say you don't have a girlfriend as a sex tourist, people would say'good for you, because you're here for sex with as many girls as you can fit in two weeks'. With being an expat that's a different matter. People might wonder what's wrong with you in that you can't get a girlfriend after an extended amount of time.

Some see this fee as 'renting' (Thais have a very nice term for that mia chao - Rental Wife), some as a gesture to help the girl support her family.

I agree THB 20,000 is quite a little steep. In determining the fee for my rental wife I would think what she and her family would need such an amount for and if in any way Papa and Mama could contribute in their own living expenses.

I can assure you that she would not leave me if I would cut her allowance from THB 1,000 to 0.She firmly believes in my other asset than being a nice sweet guy.

I suspect that Scobie was using the term 'GF allowance' as a fairly broad term.

I mean even if you are not sponsoring a girl she expects you to pay for everything - travel, meals, birthday presents, drinks etc. It might also be used to include p4p or to be a p4p allowance if you dont have a gf. Sounds about right to me.

Note that Bt165k a month is roughly US$45,000/year - roughly equivalent to the median US salary.

A normal expat salary is about Bt300,000 per month, so that is well within most expat's means.

Scobie, I seem to remember that you are a lawyer, so your will be living well within your means at that sort of expense level. It will be interesting to see whether you keep your spending within this budget - or whether, with all the fun around, your monthly expenses actually exceed Bt200k a month.

The purpose of me listing my budget was for information only. I wasn't intending on getting into a discussion on the rights and wrongs of what we all care to think of as cheap or not cheap.

But to clarify a couple of things. Rent in Bkk varies (so far as I'm aware) from 2000 baht a month up to 250,000 baht a month. I'm paying a huge amount for a local, and probably a hell of a lot for farang here working as teachers. I'm paying at the lower end of what I could call the high-end expats spectrum.

I am new to Bkk. I deliberately chose to treat myself on a high quality place because I didnt know the city well. As I indicated, when my lease is up and when I know that I'm staying here for a long time as I do now (and didnt when I arrived), I will be buying a property or - at the least - moving to a cheaper place. We all have things that are important to us: at my stage of life it is to have a beautiful retreat to hideaway in. The quality of my place is such that I like to stay there, and not spend each and every evening in the bars. It works out to be a good deal FOR ME. Not for everyone, but for me certainly.

And the GF 'allowance'. OK, I should point out that this is not something I give the GF every month in the form of a formal allowance. It is how much I 'mentally' allow myself to be generous with her each month. Perhaps I used the word 'allowance' in a sloppy way. The only thing I do on a fixed basis for her is pay her rent at her place...5000 a month. I also pay her (miniscule) university tuition fees. If we decide to move in together, that will obviously stop. The balance is kinda like a mental limit I have in mind for shopping treats etc. Is that renting a gf? I don't know. I met my GF on a previous trip and we got together again when I moved here. I screwed around for a month or so but - for me - that felt futile and I realised I had a good thing with this girl.

What can I say, I'm a generous guy. Would she stop seeing me if I wasnt generous? I don't know. Probably. If we spent time thinking of such things, we'd kill ourselves with uncertainty. TIT. Things are different here. She recently told me she wished I didnt earn expat salary because then other girls wouldnt try to get to me. I'm under no illusions though. I'm 40, and she's a cute 25 year old. Go figure.

Someone else mentioned about saving nothing here. My budget is about 45% of my net monthly income in Thailand. I religiously wire 150k each month to a high interest account in Australia. The aim is to wire it back one day to buy some property for my retirement.

Abrak... I actually anticipate my costs will go down, rather than up. They have slipped a lot over the last two months, especially now that I have covered all the set up costs.

The things that cost most here compared to overseas - wine, cars etc - don't really interest me although I will buy a car for cash if I decide to move out of Bangkok, but that is a decision for next year. I've only P4P'd once in the four months I've lived here, so that's not an expense either.

Frankly, I'm finding it hard to spend money here. Everything I want in life is cheap. It's only the crap I don't want that costs a lot.

The only new expense area I can see is travel. I havent done the trips to Cambo, Laos, Chiang Mai etc etc that I'd like to because I havent had time. No doubt that will change in future.

Rent (Suk 11, brand new, 200 sqm) 58,000
GF allowance 20,000
maid 4000
power / air etc 4000
UBC 1500
water 1500
groceries etc 6000
eating out 15,000
entertainment 20,000
books / dvds 2000
gifts etc 6000
transport / taxis 6000
internet 400
misc (inc clothes / travel etc) 20,000

Total c 165,000

I know I could easily 'live' for a quarter or a third of this amount and still be relatively comfortable, but I chose not to. That might be the future; right now I'm here to enjoy myself. This amount gives me a quality of life I could never have had before.

Hope that helps other newbies.

Scobie, this is very informative. If I had the choice, I would move there right now and live it up like you. For a mere $4,000/month, you are living the life of every man's dream. I know a guy who lives like that in the States, but I would venture to guess he must be paying 10 times what you pay there. You are one lucky..........#@#$%^^&

You earn the money, spend it how you like...I'd imagine (sincerely hope) you're having a great time doing just that

For the benefit of those looking for something more 'affordable' may I make these comparisons:

Rent: 10,000 baht. Nice house near tube in quiet cul-de-sac soi (2Bed, 2Bath, Kitchen, etc.)
Electricity: 1,000 baht. Two aircon on maybe 12 hours/day (GF likes it), several fans (I like them) and three air pumps for various fishy things.
Water: 120 baht

well I for one live in paris and bangkok and would not blink if I spend €5,000 a month.

i do have a 2 bed apartment in bangkok, that I decorated and furnished myself, and cost me about bt.14K per month all-up, I love it because time not spend here the cost is bt.10K, paris is free.

when I travel around though I go 1st class and stay at 5* suites, the point is if you have it spend it, you dont feel anything anyway, it does not matter if shoes are a €100 or €40!

yes I spoil the girls I love college/student girls, but thats my choice, so if they make bt300K plus, yes you live a good lifestyle.

but considering bangkok is poluted, social life is poor for networking, you have to live and move around the crap in the streets, yes than sometimes the clean city's and country side we're used to in the west are surely missed. so, asia great when we have the cold months in europe.

most expats i've known all go back for that reason as the novelty surely wears off!

This is certainly not my experience.

Yes most expats eventually 'go back'. But it seems the major reasons are:

1. They are sent 'back' or elsewhere by their companies. If they really like Thailand they are then left the uncomfortable choice of giving up their careers (and usually a substantial part of their package) or moving to where they are sent.

2. Thailand is fairly incompatible with having a stable western family life. There are all the TGs, the fact that your wife might be unhappy plus Thailand is hardly the best place in the world to educate your children.

Far from the novelty wearing off, I find that most expats get so engrained in the lifestyle here that they find it difficult to move - by that I am refering to the maids, drivers, secretaries, service rather than simply the availability of awesome pussy.
