Good think I personally don't have any such bank accounts, and that I don't have any holdings that qualify.

I'm just a poor kid with no assets - what can I say.

Same for me, I have a son in Grad School and a Daughter in Uni. Hell, I cannot afford to shit much less have it silver or gold plated (see other thread for reference)...

I was planning to open a joint account with my TGF and I asked her to go to Bangkok Bank to check out the details and get the forms ( I will go with her when I am in LOS next time to actually open the account). She went to her branch which is in the Big C at Rajadamri and they told her that only a married couple can open a joint account. I checked the forum - the last mention of a joint account with a TGF was a couple of years ago. Either the rules have changed or the bank staff was misinformed (I suspect the latter). If anyone has any recent experience with any bank opening a joint account between a Thai national and a foreigner (who are not married), please let me know. Thanks

Why do you need it to be a joint account?

My bank in the UK has a streamlined process (they take phone instruction) to t/t funds as long as it is going into an account in my name. In BKK I was thinking it would be easier if she has an ATM card in her name - therefore I was thinking joint account. Now that I think about it, I could just open the account in my name, get an ATM card and just have her use it. Any specific banks/branches that will let me open an account without hassle? I plan to open it with about 10K baht.

rcpsj, these days without a work permit, you won't be able to open a bank account. The last we checked (about 6 months ago), the only bank that allows you to open an account with the work permit is Kasikorn Bank.

Not sure there is a specific rule folllowed by all branches. I've been reading about foreigners beeing denied bank accounts for years whereas I and a few more friends had no problems opening the same accounts in different branches (BKKbank main branch on Silom, the smaller one near Maesak further up Silom and the branch on Suk 4 all went fine. Thai farmers in Rangnam was OK as well) Not sure if it's still the case though.

When leaving Thailand I ended up with a bunch of debit cards but no clue about their pin codes... Than threw away most of them. Don't tell the IRS BTW! 627bht might be seized out of those abandonned accounts!

Thanks for the feedback. I will go to the BKKBank main branch at Silom and see if I get anywhere. Worth a try.

You should be able to open a savings account at most banks. You will receive an ATM card and can withdraw at the counter upon presenting your passbook and the appropriate signed withdrawal slip.

This has worked fine for me over the past 30 years.

Checking accounts generally require work permits.

I just opened a current account at Bangkok Bank Emporium Branch this morning. They need to see your passport and work permit. It took about 15 minutes - very painless.

Sadly, on average for the past 5-6 years, I've only made it to LOS once every two years.

This leaves me with the same damn problem each time I return: My bank account has been closed due to non-activity.

In your experience, will it help to transfer a small amount to my ATM account once in a while to keep it alive?

Which bank should I expect to be willing to open a fresh account with me having nothing more to show than an honest face, my passport and a few Euros to deposit ?

(I got lucky with Thanakhan Ayuttaya back in 2005, but I've heard they might not be helpful anymore).

Thanks.

Oh, by the way. I won't be staying in BKK this summer, only Chiang Mai and Pattaya. But I suppose all major banks have branches there as well...
