Jingo, When I visited in February the A$1 was hovering around the 22/23Bt mark. This made me watch my pennies. I don't know why the Baht was so strong earlier this year? Just part of the GFM mess I guess As a fellow BTF scholar said to me at the time if your $1 is above 30 Baht life becomes just so much easier and there is no need to keep such an eye on the expenses

History shows that it is very difficult to predict currency movements with any accuracy. The Australian $ is especially volatile.Although Australia is a relatively small economy its currency is one of the 5 most traded, and this tends to magnify any value variations. The exchange rate of the A$ is largely determined by movements in global prices for commodities such as coal and iron ore.China and Japan are Australia`s biggest customers for these commodities. The Reserve Bank of Australia has indicated that China`s demand for these commodities could weaken, and that the tentative improvement in the Japanese economy is somewhat fragile. Thus although some foreign exchange traders are forecasting that the $A will be worth 90 US$ cents (and hence 30 baht) by Nov/Dec it could quite easily decline to 80-85 US$ cents.

the u.s. govt. is tanking the dollar in order to re-inflate the economy..... sure, our trading partners hate that we are doing this, but this policy is already in full swing. too many $'s in circulation and a lot more being printed. but no hyper inflation coming as long as deflation keeps lowering the prices of goods and services. this is japan all over again, print all you want......

Jingjo, the $A has been very volatile over the last 18 months, with extreme swings on many occasions since it was floated in about 1985.That is characteristic of a commodity based economy. On the other hand the US$ has been the global reserve currency pretty much since the end of WW2.Most of the major world trading nations hold billions of $US as part of their currency reserves.A reserve currency needs to be kept relatively stable. While a gradual decline in the value of the $US can be tolerated extreme fluctuations cannot. For the best part of a decade the USA has been running ever increasing domestic and foreign trade deficits, which it has funded largely by selling US treasury bonds to foreigners. So long as buyers of these bonds remain confident that the USA has the capacity to honour its financial obligations the $US will remain stable, although it is likely to continue to decline in value if the USA continues to spend more than it raises in taxes,or imports more than it exports. At the moment the $A is increasing in value not only relative to the $US, but to most major currencies just as it did prior to the global melt down in late 2007 when it declined from almost parity with the $US to below 70 cents US in a matter of weeks. That decline occurred because investors moved their money out of $A into $US because the $US was regarded as a safer currency, less likely to lose value than a commodity based currency whose main exports were likely to decline in value due to reduced demand because of a global recession. Thus it is always on the cards that the $A could in 3 months buy anywhere from 25 to 30 or more baht while the $US will still buy 33 to 34 baht.

Tezza, you may be getting things a bit confused. At Z, the ones that lecture economics and those with the degrees are not the same. Or as the saying goes usually "Those Who Know Don't Talk, And Those Who Talk Don't Know."
