in your present crusade of supporting right-wing oppressive military dictatorships...

Like CC said - the military government under Prayuth is doing a better than any government over the past 20 years, and they are doing a good job so far.

Do you actually want the conditions back that existed prior to the current government? Extra-Judicial killings, riots, protests, fear and intimidation in the streets, widespread corruption, etc....

Really? That was better?

Are you for real? What country are you from? Do you really advocate such a repressive regime for your own country? Where, when the dictator holds a press conference, he threatens the press if they ask the wrong questions? Where dissenting academics are disappeared, and tortured by the army? Where the dictator makes statements in response to a terrorist attack such as, “well, if the police want to solve it, they should watch the TV show Bluebloods? Are you really that daft? Do you take a “well, Mussolini made the trains run on time...” approach to government?

Or is it that you don't support such a regime at all in your home country, but because of your paternalistic, racist condescension toward the Thais, you agree with the elite Yellow Shirts that “the poor are too stupid to vote,” that you share similar goals in keeping the minorities of Thailand (Isaan, Lanna, southern Malays--who actually form the MAJORITY vis-a-vis the Central Thai/Chinese/palace hangers-on/toadies) poor, uneducated, so you can exploit them and enjoy pussy in the bars of Bangkok?

Seriously, you have me baffled. Would you REALLY tolerate an idiot like Prayut, or the naked and obvious oppression that his regime brings, by force, to the country, in your own land?!

Say what you want about Thaksin--and yeah, blahblah, we all know, you have tons to say--he did one significant thing: he awakened the poor and downtrodden of Thailand, and gave them the IDEA that maybe, just maybe, they could have a piece of the pie and a say in how things are run. Was he ready to deliver on those promises? Did he have the interests of the poor in mind? Probably not. But once they were given the idea, it's very hard to go back to traditional modes of silencing and oppressing them.

The violence in the streets preceding this military coup may have been instigated by elements of the Thaksin regime with less than virtuous motives. But plenty of Thai working poor--I meet them every day, I f*** them, I drink with them, I talk with them in their home languages (Lao and Khmer), not in that silly polite Central Thai that was largely invented in the 1930s--really believe that it's time for them to be able to vote, to be able to be heard. I also “hang” with plenty of Thais abroad, people who escaped the narrow Thai world view of hierarchy and oppression, who earned PhDs abroad, and who today do not dare to return to the country of their birth, lest they be taken away by the military and have car batteries attached to their balls.

And this is the government you support? You should be embarrassed to even breathe the same air as such noble people.

Very well said, Vox.

I have lived in Isaan for the past 7 years and can tell you the folks up here have no respect for the junta. They fear what the military will do but there is no respect.

The duck is Austrian. His role model for strong leadership is somewhat skewed by his personal experience.

Vox, it's fascinating that someone pretending to live with Thais and live in Thailand, as you do, you fail to grasp the most elemental bigger picture at stake here. No surprise, really - your buddy DG doesn't either, and he is the one advocating carpet bombing all of Bangkok. Not sure you'd agree with his views.

If you feel so strongly in favor of democracy and rural Thais being given a voice in Thai politics, then you SHOULD be supporting the Prayuth government - because the ultimate goal of Prayuth is to pave the way for realistic and true democracy in Thailand.

By your own words, you have admitted that the Thaksin way was hardly democracy and that he didn't care about the best interests of your beloved rural Thais, and that his all-permeating influence throughout Thai politics had stifled any hope of real democracy.

Yet, here you are decrying Prayuth who is attempting to cleanse the political landscape of Thaksin and all his influences, and create a neutral landscape to actually allow the very type of democracy that you cheerlead for.

Does what he does disenfranchise the rural poor Thais? You'd need to demonstrate that, as so far what Prayuth has declared AND WHAT HE DOES shows the opposite ultimate goal - namely restoring true and effective democracy to Thailand.

How would you go about doing that, since you apparently know so much ?

lots of expats have been hurting when it goes down to 35 or less.
Difficult to live on an ever decreasing pension. As for Thais they are scared whoever is in power, thats how things are done in the kingdom.

One can only hope that when the real revolution goes down, the one that lays flat the elite oppressors of the poor and the palace toadies desperately trying to hang on to their outmoded system in the 21st Century (and the sad-sack elite farang suck-asses trying to help prop them up), that someone will deftly skewer your Nazi liver on a sharp piece of metal, and then parade it to the market for a nice roasting and consumption by all those gathered around...

They're "paving the way for democracy" by delaying general elections for at least two more years.

Nothing happening until 2017 at the earliest.

That has always been so and only now something is being done about it.

But what does that have to do with the exchange rate?

Rate is good now so good for tourism.and thats what we should be concerned about.
