Having opened a successful nightclub in 1998 and a not so successful restuarant in 2001...
I look back on the frustration and stress going thru the opening process with a smile on my face....I laugh that at times I would turn my cell off and curl up in the fetile position in my bed because I didnt want to hear anymore bad news about something going wrong 
Back on topic,
when the wife and I visit the in-laws in 2 weeks I am going to figureout something enterprising for them to do.

That's an idiotic thing to say, Mel - a propensity towards failure is cultural, not genetic. As such, any such cultural affect can be influenced, and turned around - but don't expect it to be easy. Your statement is like saying stupidity or religion are genetically caused.
I've seen more disappointing farang, than disappointing Thai people.
Mind you, I'm not saying it's easy, just don't place the blame incorrectly - and proceed via baby-steps. Your mistake would be to assume western motivation, where none is. Don't set him up with a higher level position with better pay - give people an easy position, at average pay, and see how they take to it - then 'encourage' them to explore what hey can do.

The Duck does have a point – just look at the French. Just because most french are A-holes, does not mean it is genetic. It’s simply cultural – they teach them how to be the very best A-holes they can possibly be from a very young age there.
As for the number of disappointing Farang vs the number of disappointing Thai, I think that might be effected by one’s expectations. I generally don’t have very high expectations when dealing with anyone in LOS (Farang of Thai) and thus I can help to prevent myself from being disappointed on a daily basis. I mean how high should one's expectation be when dealing with people we meet on a whore monger forum? I do however, tend to interact more with Thai’s on a day-to-day basis and therefore I tend to get disappointed more often by Thais.
As for the exchange rate, dare I say while I am not all that happy with the current situation (especially since I get paid in USD, and spend more than half my life in LOS spending in bath), it is not all that surprising. The dollar is weak pretty much everywhere, and Japan is not a very solid measuring stick as the Japanese government tries very hard to keep the Yen/Dollar rate within certain limits to prevent too much trouble for Japanese trade. On the up side for me my company still produces most of our product in the USA. The weak dollar is good for our business, and we are on track to have a record year in sales.

Good points raised all round.
Yep Cultural rather than genetic would have been a better description, but it's rife throughout Isaan. I know maybe 200 people in my wifes home town and only 2 families don't have this thinking and guess what they are quite successfull.
Mai pen rai, the brother -in-law suddenly motivated and actually got a few things done, he had to telephone for some advice ( I have no problem there as he is no expert at what he is doing), progress has gone from NIL to a fair pace in just a few days!!!!! Maybe I have done good offering him to manage? Time will tell.
He sure appreciated and responded to 3 months wages in advance. He built a small HUT on my other land and that is were he lives, so not likely to do a runner....lol.
He has even asked for a "tent" so he can stay on the land near the product to guard it,,, THE BIGGEST predator is not Eeels or Birds it is your Neighbours !!!!!oh we are making progress
I have given up trying to buy pumps, etc from Isaan as pricing is wrong, and also too much opportunity for incorrect decisions,, buying from Aus and shipping over looks far better.
As I explained to my wife this is going to be tried, not just played with but done with enthusiasm and confidence whether it kills me or her family
Translations for the water testing kits are being done and that will help.I believe the whole thinking on this will change just after the first batch of product is sold, so 9 months of head-aches ahead and then "Hopefully " smooth sailing.
IBF,, trip in January includes my Parents,,, considering they are worth some AUD 5 million I hope I can resist feeding them to the fishes...LOL,,, Joke of cause.

The baht opened at Bt36.90-Bt36.94 to the dollar yesterday and shot up to Bt36.88 during the day's trading, before closing at Bt36.89.
