When I use the hotel safe, I make a point of writing on the envelope in front of the clerk how much money I took out. I'm always sober when I do this. So far never a problem.
Paranoid maybe, but at least I got all my money. 
12 days untill showtime.

I took the cushions off my lounge last night and found two 10 baht coins ,an Aussie dollar and a few halalas not enough for a trip to Bangkok but it is a start!

When you are the only one with the key or the combination.
In Thailand with the hotel safes you are, as you correctly point out , still taking a risk.

the first time i ever went to Patong in stayed in an up-market hotel with a room safe in which you chose your own number.
i spent 7 nights with the same girl and used the safe ever night.
the girl would always laugh whenever i opened it,not letting her see the number.
on the last day she showed me how she could open the safe by putting in a certain combination.
she opened it 3 times by using a combination different to mine.
where i normally stay has a bank of individual safes behind reception.
the only person who had a key to the room was the owner and more than once i had to wait around a hour for him to appear to open the room.
the safes needed 3 keys to open them,i had one,he had one and the other was kept in a drawer which he also was the only one with a key.

Nokna, interesting info. What's more - beinga simpleminded norwegian myself it is interesting as the EL-Safe in 90% og hotels are made by this norwegian company. Is there a connection here?
BTW - did she showyou how she managed to open the safe?

in australia hptel have these gates and they give you a number combination to open it and get in. now guess what, the number is composed of 4 digits which are always the same. the other digits, usually 2 to 4 additionally, are put around it. so all gates have different codes, but if you figure out the 4 main ones, you get in everywhere. but i dont know if it is the same principle with your tg opening your safe. just came to my mind.

she showed me the solution,her brother worked for a company servicing the safes and he had told her that most safe numbers could be overridden.
there is a code which does it all(i'm don't know it if was just his company or all safes).
got your PM and am sad......

i'm not sure about your theory.
all i know is that i could change the code every time i went to the safe.
but there might be a universal answer

as liftoff mentioned most safes in hotels worldwide are made by this certain company. there is a default setting to reopen in case you have forgotten your code.
those default sshould have been changed after installing, in about 90% of the cases it isn't. If you are together with somebody who has git some connections to hotel staff, it wouldn't be very difficult to get hold of that code.
just the same like most pin cards on mobile phones do have a first setting which is mainly 0000. many user do also not change that.

The El Safe that most places use are not a very difficult safe to get into. There is a factory override code that the hotel has. Otherwise, the drunk guy who resets his would be in big trouble.
This is why I think that anyone who will not stay in a room without a safe is little naive.
In 15 years of active mongering, I've never had a girl steal any money or anything of real value. (Sometimes they'll take lotion or shampoo, I'm never sure if this is purposeful or not)
The only times I have been ripped off it's been at the airport, and only in the USA. I could have prevented it if I was a bit more careful.
This trip to BKK, I had all my trousers made with a secret inside pocket. Didn't cost me any extra, and it's nice to keep the most important things there. Just keep some smaller bills in my pocket.

I forgot the combination on my electronic safe at the Sheraton and the hotel guy came to my room with a mechanical device to open the safe. That İhotel does not have an override code....Just my 2 baht....
