This is certainly not my experience. Yes most expats eventually 'go back'. But it seems the major reasons are: 1. They are sent 'back' or elsewhere by their companies. If they really like Thailand they are then left the uncomfortable choice of giving up their careers (and usually a substantial part of their package) or moving to where they are sent. 2. Thailand is fairly incompatible with having a stable western family life. There are all the TGs, the fact that your wife might be unhappy plus Thailand is hardly the best place in the world to educate your children. Far from the novelty wearing off, I find that most expats get so engrained in the lifestyle here that they find it difficult to move - by that I am refering to the maids, drivers, secretaries, service rather than simply the availability of awesome pussy. well you hit the nail right on its head with answers 1 & 2, why the hell someone with a good career would drop his salary or lifestyle is beyond me, yes drivers, maids and pussy are great, but I have them in paris too. the point is, try to drive a nice car here, have an intelligent conversation here, raise a family where the kids are spoiled to buggery, where is the great arts, theaters, movies, I think its great to go back to a civilised world from time to time, there are so many other great places in this world. i tell my friends to get a portable job at all cost, become im/exporters, deal makers, consultants, have a tax free lifestyle and freedom to go when you want to go. yes some of them have done that and use thailand as a base, but to make $$$ they go elsewhere and get paid in hard currencies.

Actually, it's not all about money. Or lifestyle. It's (supposed to be) about being happy, ain't it? Some of the unhappiest people I've met (earning great money) have been ex-pats in various places trying to recreate home in places where it isn't really possible. I know NYers in SF who can't do it, Londoners in Brighton who can't do it as well as people in the Middle East, HK, Singapore and Tokyo. You either want to be somewhere -- and money is only a small part of that equation -- or you don't. I'd suggest that however much money you've got, you either want to be somewhere (e.g. Bangkok, the rest of Thailand, etc.) or you don't. Recreating your (home) lifestyle in a different place doesn't really work in the long term. You end up 'at home' but with too much heat/cold/whatever. It's easier being at home...at home. And as for the implication (unless I misunderstood) that Thailand isn't civilised, well I suppose you and I must use different indices.

The more you have the more you spend. I met a friends girlfriend (from Peru) and I just had got back from LOS. I was telling her how cheap it was. She then said "you spent a lot of money though" yes, I did. when everything is cheap you just do more. Like someone else pointed out, you would have to spend 10 times what you spend in LOS for the equivalent in the west.

great post, MarkC. And to the idiot who thinks (or implies) that LOS is not civilized ( just because it's not as industrialized), just go to their temples, palaces, library, museums......etc. Of course they have great art, theater, music, literature.....you are just too "uncivilized" to appreciate them.........no wonder, deep down in their hearts, most Thais think of the farangs as "rich, yes, dumb, yes,yes "

The idiot who suggested Thailand isn't civilised is, of course, a French idiot. The country is famous for producing idiots arrogant enough to think that only France is civilised.

Hey, don't knock my favorite cuisine - the French Fried !! ( seriously, I saw this sign - "french fried "at one of the burger joints in the domestic departure waiting area at BKK. I spilled my cocka-cola right in front of it..55555)

"I think ten English teachers just commited suicide after reading this post after having their last 20 THB meal' ROFLAO!!! How sweet to have so vast icome differences in a country! OP, I guess I'd feel profoundly depressed if faced with a 300 000bth/mth income nowadays but probably enough to have a lot of fun in BKK if you can cope with a salary man condition. Forget about saving money though, and find a way to have you ex forget as much!

" If that's not extravagent enough for you in BKK, then I wish I had your childhood." Interesting answers in that thread... I was about to answer to more of them but guess I'd better wait for the wine come out of my blood (complimetary buffet for executive suite guests in Yangoon Shangri la, Myanmar). hiding behind one's childhood to excuse one's low income is a lame excuse, especially in the west.

Amores, Your posts remind me of a Winston Churchill quote from a dinner party at which he had too much wine in his blood. He was verbally abusing a woman and she replied to him sir, you are drunk. WC: Yes and you are ugly, but in the morning I will be sober. I guess they didn't have any mirrors in Winston Churchill's house.
