Whatever you want to do in LOS, it will be difficult to get a work permit if they think that there are Thais available to do the same job.

CC - Thats why I said your options are limited as far as jobs go, thais can do almost everything themselves at a cheaper cost to the employer.

Teaching English is one the few things that foreigners can do.

BK - 100K, yeah I understand some teachers can earn that, but at what cost? How many hours are they working, and what is their social life like? I want to work to live, not live to work. Isn`t that the same of everyone in LOS?
The guy I know, spends a lot of time playing pool, chasing girls in his free time, which he obviously has lots of. I reckon, he only works about 30-35 hours a week.

Misconception. Foreigners are working in almost every field imaginable....

About badly paid foreigners (I was one of them).....
there is a saying...

'I rather be unhappy in Thailand, then in my own country'

...And do what instead H???

So, Danger Mouse, are you trying to tell me that you have absolutely *NO* other qualifications or specialties than to be able to speak and write English?

The key, in any country (IMO) s to find a well-paid niche, and exploit it, or to be really good at something, and find fine people to pay you for it. Works for me on two continents. Ought to work for ANYONE else with the tiniest bit of motivation and a modicum of abilities beyond having a pulse.

Clearly, there is evidence of foreigners being excedingly well paid in BKK, so it's possible. I would not even consider making the move to BKK unless I can get paid moderately close to what I earn in the US, and that would be 300,000 Baht/month.

Based on what I read here, 40,000 Baht isn't even a comfortable survival level. Yeah, you'd survive, and can probably eke out a living, but that's about it. At least, IMO.

English teachers struggling to get 30,000 - 40,000 a month and your saying that most ppl you know earn MORE than 300,000 a month...

It starts long ago with a critical decision Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. Teaching may be a noble position, but not well paid in Thailand or the USA.

Forget about living here on 40K a month. What good is living at Disneyland if you cannot afford the price of admission. There are many hurdles to overcome, many of which that can be done with money.

As others have said, it would be better to keep your job back home and make a few trips a year here and party your ass off. What would be more frustrating living on the poverty level trying to make ends meet only to have beautiful women dangled in front of your face that you cannot afford or coming here with a full wallet and be treated like a king?

Good point - that's real food for thought ThaidUp. I was thinking of moving to Thailand for retirement (many moons from now) but in all honesty it's the heat that will probably keep me away. I can't imagine having to stay indoors for nine months out of the year... oh wait, I have to do that already. Damn!

I haven't read the 8 pages on this thread.

IMHO you can live quite well on 40k per month in Pattaya or even better in small town Thailand.

Guy I know in Pattaya had a studio apartment in a new building on soi 1 about 100 meters from Beach Road. Nice place, not a rathole. He paid 6500 plus 2k for electric, cable, phone. That left him 1k per day to play with. If you get a good thai girl friend, she will make your money go further.

This trip to Pattaya, I have budget of 1k per day for 60 days. I'll make a full report on how I did. I do know one thing, I will not be going to my favorite bar on Walking Street very frequently as it's not within my budget. Hello beer bars.
