Some of the unhappiest people I've met (earning great money) have been ex-pats in various places trying to recreate home in places where it isn't really possible. I know NYers in SF who can't do it, Londoners in Brighton who can't do it as well as people in the Middle East, HK, Singapore and Tokyo. You either want to be somewhere -- and money is only a small part of that equation -- or you don't.
I'd suggest that however much money you've got, you either want to be somewhere (e.g. Bangkok, the rest of Thailand, etc.) or you don't. Recreating your (home) lifestyle in a different place doesn't really work in the long term. You end up 'at home' but with too much heat/cold/whatever. It's easier being at home...at home.
And as for the implication (unless I misunderstood) that Thailand isn't civilised, well I suppose you and I must use different indices.
IMHO one of the top ten responses to a question ever posted on this forum.

Seriously wondering, left Thailand to set up a rather successful business in France but sure I have more fun in BKK!!Can manage to come back to Thailand every 3-6 weeks but doesnt feel enough, looking around daily and wonder if anyone really got it right
About entertainement prices BTW it's WAY cheaper in BKK and clubs are as good as in Paris. Too bad they have such tough closing regulations.

1. Countless nice cars here; not cheap, but definitely here.... luxury, sport, classic - heaps to choose from - maybe no autobahn to speed on, but you can drive pretty much as fast as you want most places outside of BKK without consequence... me no understan, me stupid Thai
2.... Ever see the vast numbers of NY upper eastside types? Go to dinner with them? They'll talk your ear off! Re. music, try hanging out with the orchestra crowds, jazz same same; house music and DnB, unless you live in London you won't find much better; politics - vast opportunities to talk if you speak Thai; WW politics - other than USA try talking about politics of say Poland anywhere other than Poland; gonna be tough, so I sort of concede that one; work in a decent company, and get decent strategy, planning and so on - plenty of smart people here for conversation, like anywhere have to know where to look - I have no problem finding them in both Thai and english and I don't look that hard... but then again me stupid Thai, me no understan
3. Spoiled kids: well yeah if you have a maid and so on. Why not.... hm... novel idea try looking after them yourself? Of course, I suppose they'll do better with no parental supervision eating junk food all day in a civilised country; do your job as a parent = kids not spoiled anywhere in the world.... do crappy parenting job because you are greedy worker = kids become New Kids on the Block or worse.... but me stupid, me probably misunderstan
4. Great arts, theatre? Fair enough; plenty of Thai art here, not much western art.... well art is an individual choice; cannot deny that Thailand doesn't have the history of western art, so if that's what you're into, then you wont find it. Mind you, how often do you go to the Met or similar? if every week, then yep, you'll miss it.... if once a year, take a holiday for that. Since I think the theatre is pretentious and rubbish for instance, not having it doesn't matter... but for someone else they may love it... you'd have to live in NY, London or similar to get what you probably want... or just fly there a few times a year and enjoy.
The civilised line is a great one though...... please detail to me the indications of what you think makes where you come from civilised and Thailand not civilised with particular reference to your personal involvement with each aspect of culture, society, facilities, knowledge and/or infrastructure to which you refer. We could all do with a good laugh. And me stupid Thai gook, me not understand why c***ry with overprice luggage, long piece of bread and smelly water in bottle make for civilised country. Me want civilised white man tell me truth.
